Ex-Ghana Star Lamptey Warns Partey Over Arsenal Transfer

Former Black Stars of Ghana international Nii Lamptey has warned compatriot Thomas Partey he ‘could destroy his career’ by switching from Atletico Madrid to the Premier League with Arsenal this summer.

Partey has long been linked with a move to the Emirates, and has reportedly told friends he wants to join Arsenal.

The defensive midfielder is also believed to be attracting interest from Manchester United, Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan.

But Partey has been advised by Lamptey to carry on plying his trade in La Liga, warning that his career “will take a nosedive” if he makes the wrong move.

“The country and league he will pick will determine his future,” Lamptey told Ocean 1 TV .

“I would advise him to stay in Spain rather than going to England or Italy.

“Per style of play, he can move within Spain and join another top club rather than focusing on the financial gains to move out of the country because that can be suicidal.”

Lamptey is speaking from experience, having made a failed move to the Premier League with Aston Villa in the mid-1990s.

The former Ghana midfielder joined the Villans on loan from Anderlecht during the 1994/5 season but made just 10 appearances.

“Sometimes, decision making can destroy your career,” he said.

“My move to England was a wrong one for me. Aston Villa was a wrong move because their style of play was not going to suit me.

“If I had gone to France or Spain at that time, it would have helped my career more than going to England.”

Partey has been a key player for Atletico this season, having played 24 out of 27 La Liga games as well as eight Champions League matches.

The 26-year-old has a £43million release clause, which Arsenal may struggle to pay in the current financial climate.

But if a deal can’t be reached over the player’s release clause, the two clubs could consider a swap deal, with the Spanish club keen on Gunners forward Alexandre Lacazette.
