Austine Eguavoen is set to charge of the Super Eagles for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic and Amavubi of Rwanda.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has delayed the appointment of a new head coach for the Super Eagles after announcing it will employ an expatriate in June.
The Super Eagles will begin their quest for a place at AFCON 2025 with an home game against neighbours Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7.
The three-time African champions will visit the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali to keep a date with Rwanda three days later.

Completesports.com scooped from a reliable source at the NFF that is impossible to employ a new head coach for the Super Eagles before the games against Benin and Rwanda.
The source further said Eguavoen, who is currently the technical director of the NFF is in line manage the team for the two games.
“The whole thing is quite messy at the moment. It’s unfortunate that we don’t have a coach in place less few weeks to the AFCON qualifiers, ” the source told Completesports.com.
“As things stands now, the only option is for Eguavoen to lead the team in interim capacity for the two games.
“It is something the NFF is considering at the moment and it is the only viable option.
Eguavoen it would be recalled led the Super Eagles in interim capacity at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon where they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.

Who do us this thing in this country shameless people holding positions that they are not suppose to hold
THE WHOLE NIGERIA SHOULD NOW SEE THAT OF OUR LEADERS OCCUPIED TOP POSITION SHOULD BE TRUSTED ANYMORE DUE TO UNFULFILLED PROMISE THEY ALWAYS MADE. NFF PROMISED NIGERIA THAT THEY WILL GET A FOREIGN COACH BEFORE SEPTEMBER AFTER FINIDI’S RESIGNATION IN JUNE.. BUT NOW, NO ANY COACH YET, WHAT A SHAME !!!!!!!!!!.(Likewise also, our politicians promised us palliative after subsidy removal, but nothing at the end)
EVEN COMMON TOGO, MALAWI, MAURITANIA HAVE EMPLOYED A GOOD FOREIGN COACH FOR THEIR NATIONAL TEAM.
EMPLOYING A STANDARD FOREIGN COACH BEFORE AFCON QUALIFIERS IN SEPTEMBER WOULD HAVE BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW COACH TO HAVE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP, TO KNOW, ACCESS TO PLAYERS BEFORE THE IMPORTANT WORLD CUP QUALIFY MATCHES.
BRINGING EQUAVOEN NOW (which everybody have known as SERIAL FAILURE) WILL BE A THING OF DISASTER FOR COUNTRY, PLAYERS & EQUAVOEN HIMSELF. THOUGH I LOVE HIM FOR HIS TOUGHNESS & NO-NONSENSE MAN BUT WHAT PRESENT TACTICS/MODERN KNOWLEDGE OF FOOTBALL DOES HE KNOW. WHAT REFRESHER COURSES HAS HE ACQUIRED TO UPDATE HIMSELF TO MANAGE SUPER EAGLE.
OUR ORGANIZATION, STRUCTURE ARE VERY BAD.
COMMON MALAWI, TOGO, BOTSWANA, GAMBIA, THEY PUT THINGS IN STRUCTURE AND ORDERLY.
AS A NIGERIA, COMMON AFCON NATION CUP WE CANNOT SINGLEHANDEDLY HOST IT MORE THAN ONE TIMES. NOW TO EMPLOY A TOP CLASS COACH LIKE HERVE RENARD( whose Morocco, Ghana, Ivory coast, Zambia have engaged in the past before) IS A PROBLEM TO A COUNTRY SO-CALLED GIANT OF AFRICA. WE COMPLAINED THAT THERE IS NO MONEY TO FINANCE HIS WAGES. WHAT A BIG SHAME!!!!!!!!!.
LIKEWISE ALSO, WE WENT TO PARIS OLYMPIC WITHOUT ADEQUATE PLANNING ALONG WITH UNNECESSARY DELEGATE TO WASTE MONEY. JUST TO HEAR A BAD NEWS THAT BE ONE OF OUR CYCLIST WENT AHEAD TO BORROW CYCLIST BIYSICLE FROM THEIR FELLOW GERMAN REPRESENTATIVE.
WHAT A MESS !!!!!!!!!.

Infact, it is high time for President Tinubu to ban Nigeria all the sporting federations in order to avoid subsequent local and international embarrassment.
When I talk people wil say I be witch doctor.
Even with gardiola super eagles wil not score a goal against Benin republic. They wil try try try but is like if they allow this long shot to enter the result wil be against Dem in Uyo. Actually the boys tried but the three day camping will not allow the eagles gel . Dey try to do everything possible but it like rohr wil still get a fair result.
Govt shud provide security inside the stadium to prevent crowd entering the field. Hot water helicopter shud be outside the stadium to disperse spectators that wil want to fight the authorities in charger of football in the country. Especially those who stake their money thinking they wil win money on that day .
And that could lead to fifa banning Nigeria from international football.
There are international collaborators working to achieve this . They only need ignition using poor result from the eagles and even the democracy been enjoyed now could be affected.
A word is enough for the wise .
I watched this drama two weeks ago and yet the coaching Crew is not yet announced
HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAHAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!
So in 8 months, the SE will have to switch from Peserio’s park the bus with 7 defenders to Finidi’s “you only need to know when to attack and when to defend” and then to Eguavoen’s table soccer.
And here we are hoping the SE win games…..LMAOOo.
How….???
Eguavoen had better won these 2 games or he should just respect himself and quit that undeserved NFF TD position he is occupying.
Wonders in the federal republic of Nigeria. Gusua, Pinnick and Eguadiola are really taking us for a ride thinking they own SE. Let the mojo continue!!!!
The main thing that irritates me now is why so much time was wasted deceiving us with the yeye trip to London and the phantom interviews. They obviously knew from day one who they wanted, and now the time has come to force him down our throats.
If he’s the one to handle the team, fine. No problem.
Just a caveat though.
If he succeeds, then he’s earned our trust, and he can continue if he wishes.
IF HE FAILS, his job as Technical Director of the NFF is gone.
Also, the NFF president and the entire board must, I repeat, must lose their jobs.
If these terms are agreed, then Eguavoen can go ahead. We wish him all the best.
The last time Eguavoen managed a team on ground was March 2022. Even on an interim basis, I think he is too rusty to handle the full national team of Nigeria.
Also, the bad taste of missing the 2022 Qatar World Cup on the hands of Eguavoen is still very much present to Super Eagles fans.
Why not assemble a temporary local coaching team (with coaches that are actually relatively active and aren’t seen in negative light in the eyes of Super Eagles fans unlike Eguavoen) prior to appointing a permanent foreign manager?
Seeing Eguavoen in the dugout will be sure to deflate and upset very many Super Eagles fans even before any ball is kicked.
The NFF do not have their fingers on the pulse of public opinion : fans don’t want Eguavoen, simple.
If you need (more) time to appoint a substantive foreign coach, so be it. Then assemble another group of local coaches for September’s games only and then have a permanent coach in place from November onward.
Only a rookie fan would not see the writing on the wall. The script became cleared when the same broke nff shortlisted Renard, traveled to the UK with Sportless minister for meet and greet with McClaren, detoured to France to shake Chelle, later got reminded they had a deal in place for their regular applicant Sainfet.
After breaking breakfast with Renard, Lunching Lunch with Chelle, and dilly dilly dinner with Sainfet..
They are zeroing on Eguzero..
Haa there is God ooo..
Looking forward to seeing you in the dugout. all the best
The problem we have as a country is that we haven’t been able to apply the relevant sections of our laws. Having said that, what the NFF constitution says is that in the absence of a substantive coach, the Technical Director takes over the responsibility but on an interim basis.
My advise to Coach Eguaveon mostly now that we have less than 3 weeks to the all important games is that he must hit the ground running from the blast of the whistle, I mean the moment NFF upholds its constitutional provision.
Good luck Augustine Eguaveon irrespective whose ox is gored but do ensure your team wins the matches.
@Mikey, you are spot on!
Since our first match is on the 7th of next month which is just 23 days from now, I feel the Football Federation shouldn’t delay in appointing a coach to enable him get the boys together. Only that in Nigeria, we like to delay things unnecessarily.
Wao! Una don already calculate am, 23days to go. I hope nobody is going to tell us 23days is not enough for Eguaveon to win the matches. Eguaveon has another chance and if he dies well, he should take us to the World because I don’t fancy the idea of appointment a foreign coach.
*does*
They intentionally delayed because they don’t want to employ any coach. These guys have not stopped the habit of money sharing that is why they find it hard to hire a coach and let go money. Releasing money is like a curse to NFF, the love of money in Nigeria is strange from police to other sectors there’s this money phobia syndrome with Nigeria as a country.
NFF must also allow Egu to pick his team of assistants and not like they way and manner amunike was forced on him last time, the reason why SE lost to Tunisia 8n Cameroon. This isjust my mind.
Deborah abeg carry Amuneke comot for here let NFF make their announcement, that’s if they are not going to delay again. We should be about a way forward now that we have only few days to the matches and the Eagles can’t be in Rywada without a coach. If its Eguaveon, so be it as what’s important is early preparation and victory

Welcome back @Glory. Eguavoen is a good choice. Leave him to do the job.
Glory longest time where have you been? @Aro Eguadiola of NFF can not be trusted o since he’s now a politician alongside NFF.
All the staffs starting from the NFF Chairman or president whatever, deserved to be fired with immediate effect. I wish FG can intervene and risk FIFA Ban. Even without FIFA Ban who says we’re qualifying for WC anyways. But FG herself is on same level with them.
The Players should just revolt and do a meeting among themselves to ignore any further call ups until they hire a competent foreign coach. That will even give them the chance to wear Jersey for their so called home based players and then we will all see how they will be disgraced. The whole NFF, their corrupt coaches, their home based players from the dead league and ex players who always advocate for local coaches & home based players.
Very wicked and corrupt set of people
Is not better for us to be banned for two years by fifa than witnessing all these?
No wonder winning even just a tea cup became abomination at the just concluded Olympic.
This present NFF present didn’t get there by compitency so I didn’t expect magic. They just pick this man from the north and said it is the turn of the north rule hence we found ourselves here.
