Former Nigeria coach Jo Bonfrere has warned that a likely FIFA ban could destroy Nigerian football, pleading with the nation’s authorities to avoid any action that could attract sanctions from the world football governing body, Completesports.com reports.
Bonfrere spoke on Saturday afternoon from his country home in the Netherlands, in reaction to the ongoing crisis bedevilling the nation’s football governing body, the NFF.
Bonfrere guided Nigeria’s U-23 Dream Team to victory at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games men’s football event following a 3-2 triumph over Argentina in the final.

Four years later, in 2000, the Dutchman was in charge when the Super Eagles won the AFCON silver medal after losing to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on penalties in Lagos.
Nigerian Football Faces Threat Of FIFA Sanctions
Bonfrere painfully admitted that the current NFF has ‘failed’, but warned that Nigerian football would be worse off if caution was not exercised. He advised that the authorities should follow the proper process for replacing the current leadership instead of pursuing a ‘forced’ process that could attract a FIFA ban.
“No World Cup for Super Eagles (in 2026), no World Cup for Super Falcons in 2027 and no AFCON and World Cup for Flying Eagles in 2027. This is too bad and Nigeria will take too long to recover from it,” Bonfrere began.
“That means the Federation (NFF) did not do well. But Nigeria needs good organisation to reset its football. This has to be done through a legitimate process. You have to be careful so you don’t get a FIFA ban, which will destroy the game here in Nigeria.
Nigerian Football And The Risk Of Government Interference
“If FIFA bans Nigeria, it will affect Nigerian players and there will not be World Cup, AFCON and all that for Nigerian football, and the young talents will suffer,” Bonfrere warned.
The leadership of the NFF, led by Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has been under intense pressure to resign following the Super Eagles’ and Super Falcons’ failures to qualify for the 2026 and 2027 FIFA World Cup finals respectively, as well as the Flying Eagles’ inability to qualify for the 2027 AFCON, through which the team could have fought for a FIFA U-20 World Cup berth.

Bonfrere’s comments come amid calls for changes at the NFF, with the former Nigeria coach stressing the need for any leadership transition to follow a legitimate process and avoid actions that could be interpreted as government interference in football administration.

He warned that FIFA sanctions would have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s national teams and young players if the situation escalated into a ban.
A FIFA ban would potentially prevent Nigeria’s national teams from participating in major international competitions and could also affect the country’s young footballers, according to Bonfrere.
The Dutchman therefore urged caution in resolving the current NFF crisis, stressing that the process must protect the future of Nigerian football rather than expose the country to further sanctions.
