Falconets forward Janet Akekoromowei is on the brink of completing a long-term move to Portuguese champions Benfica, Completesports.com reports.
The transfer represents a major breakthrough in the 18-year-old’s career after she battled back from a serious injury that temporarily stalled her dream of playing in Europe.
Akekoromowei suffered the injury during Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Senegal in Abeokuta in February, forcing her to put a prospective overseas move on hold.
Before the setback, the highly rated striker had been close to sealing a switch to Spanish giants Barcelona Femení.

Having fully recovered, Akekoromowei is now set to embark on the next chapter of her career with Benfica, one of Europe’s leading women’s clubs.
The prolific forward enjoyed a remarkable 2025 campaign, earning the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Most Valuable Player award following a series of outstanding performances for Bayelsa Queens.
She was also a member of Nigeria’s Falconets squad at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, where she featured in three matches.
Despite her young age, Akekoromowei has already broken into the Super Falcons and has been capped at senior international level, underlining her status as one of Nigeria’s brightest attacking prospects.

So why did Super Falcons Coach, Justin Madugu, not invite Janet for his WAFCON 2026 squad to unleash this outstanding striker to terrorise African nation defences at this Wafcon, starting this weekend?
I thought she was carrying injury, but this Benfica move shows she has fully recovered. Very strange from Coach Madugu!
