At least a dozen family members and associates of Argentina’s players were detained by police at MetLife Stadium.
Law enforcement intervened following the 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, as altercations erupted in the stands and spilled into the VIP/family sections.

The ugly off-field scenes followed a chaotic conclusion on the pitch. Tempers flared at the final whistle, with Argentina’s Leandro Paredes receiving a red card for grabbing Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat, Nahuel Molina appearing to strike Rodri, and other members of the coaching staff clashing with Spain players.
According to Colombian broadcaster Noticias Caracol, police intervened in the section occupied by the players’ relatives after tensions escalated.
Due to the escalating violence and scuffles involving the families of the players, police surrounded the enclosure and arrested at least a dozen individuals.
As of now, it remains unclear if formal charges have been filed against those detained, as US authorities and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) are yet to release further statements.

FIFA has now officially launched an investigation into the incident.
Depending on the findings of the review into both the pitch brawls and the disturbances in the stands, Argentina players could face significant bans and the AFA could be handed severe fines.
