Folau Commits To Wallabies

Israel Folau has signed a new four-year contract with Rugby Australia which means he will be available for the Wallabies until 2022.

The full-back, who is third on the Wallabies’ list of all-time top try scorers, agreed on a contract extension with his Super Rugby side the Waratahs last October, but his negotiations with the RA have proved more complicated.

However, the 29-year-old has now finally put pen to paper on a new deal and he admits he is delighted to have got his future sorted out, as he can now focus on his preparations for this year’s World Cup.

“I’m really grateful to Rugby Australia and the Waratahs for all they have done for me,” Folau was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “The World Cup is a big target of mine this year and I believe this Wallabies group can go a long way if we keep on improving.”

Folau, who is a former rugby league player, had been linked with switching codes once again prior to signing his new contract, while several clubs from outside Australia had also reportedly shown an interest in him.

News of Folau’s extension will also come as a huge boost to Australia boss Michael Cheika, who is looking to move forward following a disappointing 2018 that saw the Wallabies win just four of 13 Tests.
