Friendly: Super Falcons Target First Win Against USA

Nigeria’s Super Falcons and USA women National Senior Teams clash in Washington D. C on Tuesday in the second of a two-match tour of the United States by the nine-time African champions.

Three-time world champions USA trounced the Falcons 4-0 in the two teams’ first encounter at the Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday, with a brace from Sophia Smith and one each by Lindsay Horan and Alex Morgan.

Both USA and Nigeria have qualified to participate at the 9th FIFA Women’s World Cup finals to be staged by Australia and New Zealand in the summer of next year.

Tuesday’s encounter will take place at the Audi Field in Washington. Audi Field is utilized by National Women’s Soccer League side Washington Spirit and Major League Soccer team, D. C. The game will commence at 11pm Nigeria time (6pm in Washington D. C)

Meanwhile, prior to their clash with USWNT in Kansas City, the Super Falcons took time to have a ‘Meet and Greet’ session with some prominent Nigerians based in the State of Missouri, including Adeola Ajayi (ex-Nigeria basketball team player), Chioma Atanmo (Community Manager, Sporting KC), Olofu Agbaji (ex-Nigeria basketball team player), Tijani Idris (ex-Nigeria basketball team player) and David Ehindero (a U.S –based Nigerian businessman).

Also at the simple but lively session were John Allagh (ex-Nigeria basketball team player), Prince Tega (a player with NFL football team, Kansas City Chiefs), Ochai Agbaji (ex-Nigeria basketball team player).

Can anyone please give a streaming site so I can watch the match.

  • Personally, I would recommend Waldrum reverts to his more pragmatic 3-5-2 formation against the USA in the second leg of these friendly games.

I don’t think it will help them win, rather I think it would make it difficult for them to be defeated. It will provide width and movement along the flanks. The defensive midfield will have a double pivot with the centre back having a buffer of three bodies.

There will be a centre attacking midfielder with two strikers up front.

My Ideal starting 11 will be:

    – Chiamaka Nnadozie

    – Nicole Payne; Michelle Alozie

    – Oluwatosin Demehin; Osinache Ohale; Glory Ogbonna

    – Deborah Abiodun: Christie Ucheibe

    – Esther Onyenezide

    – Gift Monday; Uchenna Kanu

Gooooaaaalllll an inspired substitution kanu comes on for echegini and scores 1-1

    • Absolutely!
Waldrum got that right. This his new diamond 4-4-2 Formation has come alive with the introduction of Kanu.

It’s a hybrid 4-2-3-1(morphs into a diamond 4-4-2 on the ball and 3-4-3 of the ball) but at least there aren’t any square pegs in round holes. He’s corrected his mistakes from the previous match.

      • Thanks Codex. It is actually more of a 4-2-3-1 in the second half

Much improved performance…..Alot of work to still be done by Waldrum. We can all see what youth can do to a team.

  • USA 2:1 Nigeria. Very much improved performance from the Randy Waldrum/Lauren Gregg tutored Super Falcons. I am thoroughly pleased more so with the second half performance.

    Well done ladies!

It could have been a stalemate if not for the error and the misjudgement by the Go for the second goal….I think she thought it was going out till it hit the pole and ricoshet..

That is the first goal the U.S will concede in 9 games..Atleast something to cheer about lol

    • There was a lot to cheer about with the second half performance. The Falcons took the fight to the Americans with Kanu being the nuisance-in-chief in opposition box.

The opportunity cost of watching this game more than made up for the alternative forgone!

I’m still wondering why our key players are not always available for key friendly matches. There are always issues with visa or health in friendly matches but everything seems to revert back to normalcy when we play in tournament.

FT USA 2-1 Super Falcons an improved performance from our girls with respect to the first game. Randy Waldrum learnt from his mistakes in the first match in terms of personell and a new tactical identity (a hybrid 4-2-3-1 which enables the team to play in triangles on the 4-1-3-2 and to press high up the pitch in a 3-4-3) it’s a bold and radical change from his previous conservative 3-5-2 and lopsided 4-3-3. There are some issues with this new setup and I’ll state as follows:-
    1. The lack of compression between the lines vertically meant that the US constantly found joy in the space between defence and midfield,if coach Randy fixes this we will be a much more harder team to beat.
    2. The new fluid system demands that the players stop playing in straight lines(which is used for counter attacks) and start playing in triangles in between opposition lines of pressure an key to this is little details in terms of better close control and accurate passes which will pull defences apart,we are lacking in this department and hopefully coach Randy sees this and encourages the players to play with more confidence and stay on the ball more which in turn will make us unplayable.
With the above points l hereby retrace my previous comments about coach Randy’s suitability to the job,it’s unprofessional in our line of work, the man has a plan and with patience and adequate support he will perfect it.
