Gattuso Bemoans Costly Errors

Gennaro Gattuso says AC Milan produced their ‘best performance of 2019’ against Juventus but they ultimately made too many mistakes. The Rossoneri had looked on course to inflict Juve’s first home defeat of the season in Serie A, as they led heading into the final 30 minutes following a strike from Krzysztof Piatek.

However, Juve turned things around late on thanks to a Paulo Dybala penalty and a cool finish from substitute Moise Kean. The 2-1 defeat means Milan have now only taken one point from their last four games. Despite their poor run, Gattuso feels Milan produced their best performance of the year against the runaway league leaders, while also suggesting it was individual mistakes from his side, rather than Juventus’ quality, that saw the match turn on its head.

“It was our best performance of 2019, we lost it in the final 18-20 minutes not because Juve did well, but because of our mistakes. These things can happen when you play the kind of football we do,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia. The defeat leaves Milan just about clinging on to fourth-place in the Serie A standings but Gattuso insists he is not worried by the recent criticism he has received from certain sections of the club’s support.

He added: “I couldn’t care less what people say. Perhaps the problem is that I won so much with this club as a player and was here for so long that people expect different things from me. I just want to be judged for what I’ve done as a coach.”
