Spain midfielder Gavi has disclosed that Argentina’s Leandro Paredes should not face a suspension, dismissing the post-match brawl at the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as a normal part of the game’s physical side.
In an interview with El Partidazo de COPE, Gavi noted that he doesn’t believe any retrospective ban is necessary.

He acknowledged that it was a poor image for children watching but maintained that aggressiveness and physical altercations belong to the natural, intense side of football.
Gavi added that any definitive punishment should have been resolved strictly during the live minutes of the match itself, rather than being handled externally after the final whistle.
‘No, to tell you the truth, I don’t think he (Leandro Paredes) should be suspended,’ he told Spanish radio station El Partidazo de COPE.
‘I understand it’s not a good image for children, but I think there’s also that side to football, which is a bit more physical, more aggressive.

‘The most logical thing would have been to send him off during the match, and that’s it. In the end, I think it’s all football, and it has to be that way.’
Despite the player’s call for leniency, FIFA appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to look into the unsportsmanlike conduct and breaches of the disciplinary code that occurred during the post-final melee.
