Gay Happy With Quick Start In California

Brian Gay says it was nice to get off to a positive start after moving into a share of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am lead on day one.

World number 155 Gay, who came into the event on the back of a tie for 55th at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, made eight birdies and just one bogey for a seven-under-par 64 on Thursday.

The 47-year-old American is joined at the top of the leaderboard on -7 by compatriot Scott Langley, who had one extra birdie and bogey on his card, and the duo are one stroke clear after the opening 18 holes.

Speaking about his round, Gay, as quoted by the PGA Tour’s website, said: “I’ve always enjoyed this course, so it was nice to come out here and play a good one.”

Four-time winner Phil Mickelson, who hit every fairway during his round, Australian Jason Day, South Korean Si Woo Kim and the American trio of Cody Gribble, Kevin Kisner and Matt Every are in a six-way share of third on -6.

World number three Dustin Johnson then heads a group of nine players, which also includes three-time major champion Jordan Spieth, who are a further stroke back on -5.
