Genk Defender Admits ‘Concrete’ Saints Interest

Genk right-back Joakim Maehle says Saints’ January interest was “very concrete” but he isn’t sure if he will leave in the summer. The 21-year-old Danish defender has been labelled as one of the discoveries of the season in Belgian football, where he has 29 league and 13 Europa League starts for the club.

Southampton were reported to have offered more than 11million euros for his signature in January when they were looking to replace Cedric Soares – but Genk refused. Maehle admits the interest from St Mary’s was serious, telling Danish newspaper BT: “I know it was very concrete but I don’t know how close a transfer was.

The club didn’t want to sell me. And I have no idea how much more money was needed to change their mind.” Clubs are expected to come back in for the Denmark Under-21 international again in the summer although Maehle is only open to a move to the right club. “I am not on course for a transfer,” he added. “But if there is interest from a club that I feel would be good for me, I will of course study it in detail.”
