AC Milan coach Marco Giampaolo declared himself happy despite watching the Rossoneri slip to a 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich. A second-half strike by Leon Goretzka was enough to separate the two sides in Milan’s first pre-season outing under Giampaolo, but the boss was not too downbeat afterwards.

“I saw a lot of positive things, Bayern were ahead of us, they had already played several games,” he said. “Most of our strongest players were out, but we still played well. “We tried to live the ideas of the game that I have been working on in these last ten days at Milanello.” Giampaolo was pleased with the performance of new signing Theo Hernandez at left-back. “I really liked Theo,” he added.
“He showed great quality and great strength, it’s a pity that he was injured, but I loved the minutes that he played.” The coach also suggested he will need to bring in a new central defender before the new Serie A season starts. “The role of a centre-back is complicated,” he said. “I have very specific requests for those who play in that role for me. When I find the players that are helpful and intelligent, everything becomes easier.”
