Team Nigeria enjoyed a superb start to the 2026 Commonwealth Games, claiming six medals on the opening day, Completesports.com reports.
The West Africans sit second on the medals table after day one with three gold, and three silver medals, trailing only Australia.
All six medals came in the para powerlifting events, underlining Nigeria’s dominance in the sport.
Veteran lifter Roland Ezuruike, 50, set the tone for the team’s impressive campaign by winning silver in the Men’s Lightweight event with a lift of 185kg.
Esther Nworgu then delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games, setting a new Commonwealth Games record with a lift of 123kg in the Women’s Lightweight category.

Her compatriot, Esther Oyema, completed a Nigerian one-two by taking silver with a 115.5kg lift.
The standout performance of the day came from Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who shattered the world record on her way to gold in the Women’s Heavyweight event with a remarkable lift of 175kg.
Rita Ferdinand claimed silver in the same event after lifting 158kg, equalling the previous world record to cap another Nigerian one-two finish.
Riluwan Idris completed Team Nigeria’s golden day by winning the Men’s Heavyweight title with a lift of 208kg, securing the country’s third gold medal of the Games.
