Coach Eddie Jones insists Dylan Hartley has not given up on his race to be fit for England’s World Cup campaign. Hartley, 33, has been sidelined since late December last year due to an ongoing knee problem and he faces a battle to be ready for the Japan showpiece.

Jones will already have his plans in place for the players he expects to take to the Far East and Northampton’s Hartley is unlikely to be in them at present. However, the Australian tactician revealed that the man capped 96 times by the Red Rose will do all he can to be on the plane in September. “Dylan has been a great character and a great captain for the team,” he said.
“It is personally disappointing for him that he cannot get himself fit but he is still endeavouring to get there. “He has not given up hope and we will keep monitoring his progress.” England will hope for a dramatic improvement from their showing at the World Cup four years ago when they failed to make it out of their pool.
