West Indies skipper Jason Holder believes his side can still win the World Cup despite slipping to a 15-run defeat against Australia. The Windies looked on course to make it two wins from two as their ferocious bowling attack ripped into the Aussies’ top order, reducing them to 38-4 and then 79-5.
However, thanks to Steve Smith and Nathan Coulter-Nile, Australia managed to make 288 runs off 49 overs and it turned out to be enough as the West Indies fell just short. Holder says he was disappointed with his batsmen as Shai Hope top scored with 68, while the skipper himself made 51, as they reached 273-9 off 50 overs. Even so, Holder refused to be too downbeat after the match.
“I thought we were well in the game, just a few irresponsible shots when we probably needed to tap it around a bit more,” Holder said. “To bowl out Australia for 288, we would have taken that – I just think the batters need to take responsibility. “We still believe we can win this competition, it’s wide open.”
