IAAF To Honour Maria Worphil With Veteran Pin Award

The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) is set to confer on one of the longest serving secretary generals of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Mrs Maria Worphil, the Veteran Pin Award for her outstanding contribution to athletics.

Mrs Worphil will be honoured with the prestigious award in September during the opening ceremony of the 52nd IAAF Congress which will precede the World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

In a letter signed by IAAF’s Jon Ridgeon and sent to Mrs Worphil, the world governing body for the sports says the beautiful and fair-skinned Mrs Worphil is being honoured for her long and meritorious service to the cause of World
Athletics.

”We are delighted that you have been nominated by your Area Association as a recipient of the IAAF Veteran Pin for your long and meritorious service to the cause of World Athletics,” the letter reads

‘Maria’, as Mrs Worphil is fondly called in local athletics circle, will be decorated with the pin at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha on
September 24.

”It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in the award ceremony which will take place during the Opening Ceremony of the 52nd IAAF Congress at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha on the evening of 24 of September 2019. On behalf of the IAAF, I take this opportunity to congratulate you and hope to see you in Doha,” further reads the letter.

Mrs Worphil has now joined the list of very few Nigerian recipients of the award. The list includes two former Nigerian internationals. the late Alhaji Abdulkareem Ohai Amun and veteran coach, Armelia Edet, while former president of AFN, Solomon Ogba, not known for his exploits on the track and generally in sports was a recipient of the award in 2013.
