Vieira Dismisses Newcastle Talk

Nice manager Patrick Vieira says he has no plans to leave the club amid speculation linking him with Newcastle. The Magpies remain in the hunt for a new manager following confirmation of Rafael Benitez’s departure last month and former Arsenal midfielder Vieira had emerged as an early contender.

The 43-year-old led Nice to a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 last season having previously spent time in charge of New York City in the MLS. Vieira certainly seems to be developing a reputation for being a shrewd tactician, but he has now confirmed he has no plans to leave Nice in the short term, therefore ruling out the possibility of succeeding Benitez at St James’ Park.

“I’m at Nice for the long run. I do not intend to go elsewhere,” Vieira told reporters as he welcomed his players back for pre-season. “I have always felt good here and with the people around me. I do not see myself anywhere other than OGC Nice.”

Vieira’s announcement means Newcastle will have to turn their attention elsewhere as they continue their hunt for a new manager. The likes of Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta and Belgium boss Roberto Martinez are believed to be in the running, while Porto boss Sergio Conceicao is also said to have thrown his hat into the ring.
