Gernot Rohr has played down the Super Eagles defeat to Algeria in Friday’s international friendly in Austria, Completesports.com reports.
The current African champions edged the Eagles 1-0 thanks to a 6th minute goal by Bensebaini Ramy.
It is a third straight win for the Desert Foxes over the Eagles and a 19th game unbeaten.
And reacting to the defeat, Rohr said it is a good test for his side as there are positives to take from the game.
“This is a very good test for us. There are positives to pick from a tough game like this.”
The German coach said their focus now is the next friendly against Tunisia.
He added:”Now we have to recover well and start to plan for the next game on Tuesday against another tough team.”

FIFA ranking is on fire. Sad one!
While we must not lose sleep over a friendly, it was a very disappointing performance! Super Eagles were helpless and disorganized.
This man continues to give people reason to criticize his abilities as a coach, how can he not know onuachu’s weakness As a striker,u have wingers don’t send crosses to d box yet he let them play for over 70 mins.chukwueze n Kalu had a poor game and there is no way Onuachu will deliver,he thrives on crosses,Awaziem would v been a better choice as a RB , he will deliver those crosses or better still put dessers who has a better footwork to play at d start of second half.akpoguma seems better as a CB and not RB ,I would have removed Ekong and pairs him with Balogun, the midfield was a disgrace and u expect d coach to play from d wings ,probably a 442 formation.
I said it that 65 mins on the pitch was too much for Onuachu. He should’ve been removed at the start of the second half but some football aficionado here said that’s not too long. I’ve been a Rohr supporter since he won the first W/C qualifying match in Zambia in the last qualifiers but man his technical input sometimes are questionable. Needs to take timely decisions and try not to play these guys out of their natural positions especially when it’s not working out.
Awaziem cross???
Bros ehn!!!
@Michel
this ur comment shows that u know nothing about football & game reading.
Rohr later change the formation of that game to 3-5-2 with the introduction of AKPOGUM, KELECHI, MUSA?
AKPOGUMA-EKONG-BALOGUN
3 CB
Now; bcos we were a goal down, CHUKWUEZE/MUSA couldn’t hold on to the wingback role but have to push forward for equalizer.
And u can see most at times that the algerian player with jersey number 20 was always alone compared to when Ebuehi was stiil on.
I like it this way, atleast rohr has played his enemies’ mind.
Call this one; call that one; that one is better; this one is better;
Confusion everywhere & when he refuse they so call ex… would come out in numbers to crucify him.
This game is an eye-opener that who ever rohr refuses to call is not good for super eagles & when the cabals force the player on him, we all see the result like what happened against algeria.
They’ve been shouting for EJUKE; let’s see what he would offer come tuesday.
Rohr want to bury this hype once and for all.
Rohr shut up , your super eagles have been averaged and scrappy for years !..When you came , you claimed they where young Eagles , that you are getting to know them , now after all these years, your eagles cants even string passes together. Why can’t you fashion out a consistent wining side for Nigeria , a side that can coordinate effectively on the field and achieve a good result for the country?.. Your days are numbered if you continue like this !!
You people are too harsh on the SE boss. Don’t you know that some of his regulars were missing? I mean the like of Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, Etebo & Joe Aribo. It must definitely affect the game.
As for me, I take side with the boss. Let’s expect better outing come Tuesday.
Soar Super Eagles, soar!
You are absolutely spot on. Everyone could see that Onuachu was struggling in the game and Rohr kept him on the pitch for 70 mins. Iheanacho should have being brought on to replace Onuachu in the 50th minute.
I have said it time without number that Nigeria can’t win any trophy with this coach. He has tried his best. But we need a coach that has winning mentality and passion for trophy. Same set of mistake that the coach made during the last nation’s and world cup competition are still same mistake he still making up till now. Delay in right substitution, no tactics and no pattern of playing.
I won’t be surprised if he make same mistake on Tuesday.
@Pato
Had it been ROHR refuse to play this ur world best ONUACHO that u & ur ROHR’s HATERs CREW have been singing like MAKKOSSA on social media; u pple would’ve nailed him to the wall by now.
He now plays him for u all to see that ONUACHU is not a national team material; u pple still complains.
I pray this same fate shouldn’t happen to EJUKE that is now the song in town.
Who ever Rohr delays to invite has a rough edge in his games quot me any where.
ONYEKA ONYEKA ONYEKA!
We all saw him against algeria; now the hype is over.
Had it been Rohr fails to play him in that game, hell would loosed that night.
We are the problems of nigeria….
Which european football nation introduces and suggest players for a national team coach and if he fails to invite the player the whole world sees him as not competent enough?
You’ve employed this man allow him to invite who he feels can fit into his team ASAP.
INVITE THIS ONE; INVITE THAT ONE; THIS ONE IS BETTER; THAT ONE IS MORE BETTER.
WHAT A CONFUSED SET OF PEOPLE?
Blame Paul Onuachu all you want… The truth is that Coach Rohr is at his wits end and outdated…
Please who are the one hyping certain players. Is it not people like you comparing this one to that one. How this player will displace this players. Don’t come here and say Rohr haters are at fault. And you honestly know Paul was not at fault in the game. Your 2 wingers who are still playing like they are in under 17, who cant cross a simple ball is heartbreaking
Onuachu can never do well as a super eagles. His playing style lacks wisdom. When he rises to head the ball he doesn’t use his brain at all. He is sluggish. He doesn’t run well. He should give way for people like sodiq olayinka dessers etc.
Fans. Because kalu and chukueze did poorly does not mean they are bad players. They have done great things for us before. They will syill do great things for us again. Let’s be patient. We have criticised iwobi this way before.
I even remember the early days of okocha too. They are good players they will do well again
That is why I said Yobo is not needed in that team. Assuming is Amunike that is the assistant coach, you won’t see all this rubbish you saw yesterday. Yobo does not even know his left from right. E.g when Musa came in, I was expecting him and Moses to change wings. Moses to move to 7 and Musa play 11. We all know that Moses do better playing 7 and Musa do better playing 11. You can’t have a coach and assistant who are both defenders during their active playing days, they will never be attack minded. Nff Sha una dey watch una back yard assistant coach oooooo.
please who is the coach, abeg who has the so called Uefa licence, so why fault YOBO. Shouldn’t Physical Education know that. Abeg leave Yobo out of this. Your coach should have known the corrections to make.
Yobo kè?… Hmmm!
Everyone knows exactly the one person who should take credit or blame when this team performs or not. However, some choose to play Ostrich.
It’s all good though.
Frank onyeka was substituted in 45mins
Samuel Kalu came off in the 50 simwthing mins
Paul onuachi came off in the 65mins
Nigeria has a style of play. It is left for onuachi to modify his game to suit how we want to play. Afterwards he is not messi or Ronaldo that nigeria as to change the way we play.
It is always going to be difficult having 3 of our midfielders missing. For me, the important thing in this friendly match is seeing some new players playing themselves into the team. The likes of sanusi and okoye. Atleast for now, even if uzoho is injured, I do not expect Akpeyi to be called up.
Moving forward, we have seen enough of onuachi and agu. It is not for the lack of ability but their style of play do not just suit our own play.
Good talk and sound judgment.
I don’t understand what GR had in mind when he said SE cannot change tactics because of Onuachu, that it is Onuachu that has to adapt with SE tactics. I disagree with this to some extent. A coach should know the strength of each player. Whenever Onuachu is playing, the wingers and midfielders should be giving him long balls, he will score. And as soon as Osimhen is there, we revert to our usual tiki taka style. You can play as many formations as possible in a match, depending on the type of players available on the pitch at that particular time.
Rohr should drop onuachu and onyeka .
Supposing he didn’t start Onuachu yesterday and the result was like this, they will say why did he not start Onuachu that have been scoring for fun instead of the one that has been on bench. Desser is now messiah, remember he is yet to debut for Nigeria and his currently not in form.We had some debutant which things did not go well with yesterday yet a lot of you are blaming the coach.. The same Awaziem has not been in the good book of most of you and you calling the coach names for not using him. Why are Nigerians like this? after all it is a friendly match. The same Onuachu wasn’t in the coach initial list if not for d injury. Onuachu is the best striker to start that match yesterday among the available striker in the team and am sure any coach in the world will do the same thing just the guy has yet to justify his selection in super eagles shirt but don’t blame him he did his best as well as others better luck in the subsequent matches. Pls lets learn to support our team be it good or bad. Senegal that u ‘re all shouting wasvspanked by Morocco yesterday as well so what is d fuss?.
Coach ROHR abeg chop come work ooooo!
We nigerians are the most confused set of people in the world…..
Shaking, troubling, nagging, infact fighting of leaders is our hobby….
LOL….
WE WOULD SAY THIS ONE TODAY, IF ITS FAILS WE QUICKLY SWITCH OVER AND SAY ANOTHER THING….
ONCE AGAIN; CHOP COME WORK OGA ROHR…..
HAHAHAHAHAHA
… Coach Rohr should be released from his contract if we perform shambolic again versus Tunisia. I want to believe his football brains is rusty now. Whack tactics always… Memories of the match yesterday bring back nostalgia of games versus England, Czech, Serbia and Croatia. At 67 years of age and archaic defensive and inferiority in our matchups… Rohr has seen better days and Nigeria is just too big for him now. His coaching has never been convincing… Before he will allude his team is too young but that shaddow alibi is now surplus to reasoning… So long! Coach Gernot Rohr… Let him become a scout for dual nationality German borns for us… He has the credit of being about to advocate for Super Eagles to positive effect on that one!
Lolz… Sack him na, olodo! Arm chair critics, who most likely are failing in their own field of endeavor, shior…
@Q you are a fool and your father is a dead rat for insulting me! I have a right to air my views on this platform… Is Rohr your father? I live in the whiteman’s land so nothing trips me about them unlike you and your father who can hold shit stool for the Whiteman to defecate… You an idiot. Did I insult you first? Air your views and move on without insult…
At least we saw some improved presence at left back plus the return of Tyrone. Okoye also performed admirably. So we may have lost but we discovered two new players.
For me, onuachu needs to develop his game as well as the wingers who dont like crossing.
Nigeria likes playing their ball on the ground with fast attackers and wingers. Thats how ighalo scored goals and osimhen too. So onuachu needs to learn to play with the ball on the ground and hold it up well when playing with Nigeria. Also our wingers should cross the ball more especially when we have a big target like onuachu, osimhem, simy, sadiq they are threats and you can use crosses to surprise your opponents.
Looking forward to seeing my guy Ejuke on Tuesday. I believe he won’t disappoint.
If super eagles need good midfielders, they should go for OBINNA NWOBODO, that’s who they need now.
Una understand the meaning of FRIENDLY MATCH at all? It simply means give new players trials and team bonding! Una put oyinbos and 9jas together in less than 3 days and una want win World cup LOL. The gain after all be say Apkoguma, Dessers, Okoye, Ebuehi, Ejuke etc Don improve their pidgin wella!!!
sack Rohr, he has nothing to offer us. playing ajayi as a dm shm!he keeps giving us holpless hope.
Hmmm why are we blaming this coach as if we don’t know that our best players were injured.Remember we where playing the African Champion that are unbeaten. Our coach did not include Onuachu in his original list, it was we the fans that want Rohr to Invite Onuachu to this friendly match. If he didn’t play Onuachu we would have still blame him,Please lets allow Rohr to concentrate in his job, This team has not been together for 11 months now please lets be patients before we crucify Him. At list He has given us good goalkeeper now and a good left back. Maduka and Sanusi impressed me. Our midfielders and our wingers were the shadow of themselves. Lets see wht will happen in our next match against Tunisia.
Go ahead and sack him na. When Keshi deployed Ambrose from Center back to right back nobody complain then. Ajayi has played the role of DM at his club that means his coach at the club must be very dumb abi? People are crying just because of a friendly loss to the African champions. A team that defeated Colombia 3:0. Do you guys think we can just walk over Algeria just like that?
For me I saw some positives going forward. We’ve found a quality left back and another reliable goalkeeper. This are the positions most of Rohr haters have been complaining about over the last 4 years. I’m surprised non of them is talking about the progress made to fix those areas. They’re here crying and clamoring for the coach to be sacked because he lost a friendly to the African champions. Lmao!! Let them keep Yapping. It doesn’t change anything.
