Keane Urges Manchester United To Strip Fernandes Of Captaincy

Erstwhile Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has advised his former club to strip Bruno Fernandes of the club’s captaincy.

Fernandes was named United’s captain at the start of the current campaign.

Keane however stated that the Portuguese is not fit for the role.

“Today having watched him again I would take the captaincy off him 100 per cent. I know it’s a big decision, obviously they changed the captaincy with Maguire, but Fernandes is not captain material,” Keane told Sky Sports News after the Red Devils 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

“He is a talented player no doubt about it. But what I saw today – we’ve discussed many times before, it was last season at Liverpool – his whinging, his moaning and throwing his arms up in the air constantly.

“It really isn’t acceptable. From what we saw today, I’m thinking I would take that off him. You have to start somewhere. We were talking about where do you start [fixing the problems] – the manager, board level.

“I would start with that because the manager is capable of doing that. Fernandes is a brilliant footballer but in terms of captain material he is the opposite to what I would want in a captain.”

Since joining the Red Devils from Sporting in 2020, Fernandes has scored 66 goals and set up 57 more in 198 appearances, and he was named the club’s Player of the Year in his first two seasons.

Manchester United’s fifth Premier League defeat of the season leaves them eighth in the table, and Ten Hag’s side will seek to bounce back in Wednesday’s EFL Cup fourth-round clash with Newcastle United.

It was a humiliating defeat for Man United.
3 nil in front of the Old Trafford faithful. Yikes.
Keane dey vex. He’s like a wounded lion, just swiping at everything and everyone around him.
He swiped at Guardiola, now he’s going for the jugular of club captain Fernandez.
Make dem no take high BP kill Keane before his time ooo.
If they strip the captainship from Fernandez, arguably the club’s most consistent player, na who dem wan come give? McTominay? Rashford? Perhaps Casemiro? Or back to the much maligned Maguire?
As for Ten Haag, with the sword of Damocles dangling ever so perilously close to his head, it must be a big challenge to focus on his job.
The pressure is mounting. All eyes are on him now. And these eyes are not smiling.
