Kirmond Still As Important For Chester

Wakefield boss Chris Chester says Danny Kirmond is just as big a part of his plans despite no longer being captain.

The second-row has had issues with injury over the last few years and Chester has decided to take the team captaincy away from him in order to ease the pressure, although he will continue as club captain.

Jacob Miller will instead lead the team but 2019 will still be a big year for Kirmond, with Sunday’s match against Hull FC set to be his testimonial fixture.

Wakefield have finished in the top eight in all three of Chester’s seasons in charge and the coach says Kirmond has been a huge part of their progress.

Despite his injury issues, the boss expects the 33-year-old to continue his influence both on and off the field. “He has been brilliant since day one that I came here,” Chester said.

“He has had opportunities to go elsewhere for more money, but Danny is a Wakefield lad – a passionate Wakefield lad and supporter and deserves everything he gets from this testimonial year.”

When asked about taking the captaincy away, he added: “I just want him to enjoy it, hence the reason we’ve moved the captaincy away from Kirmo.”
