Kompany Still Missing For City

Vincent Kompany remains sidelined for Manchester City’s FA Cup fifth-round trip to Newport County on Saturday.

Belgium international Kompany, whose contract runs out in the summer, last featured in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool on January 3 and he has missed the next 10 games because of a muscle injury.

The 32-year-old is still working his way back to full fitness and the trip to South Wales this weekend comes too early for the City skipper, leaving John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Aymeric Laporte to fight for the two starting spots at the heart of defence.

Left-back Benjamin Mendy, who has made just nine Premier League appearances this season, also remains on the sidelines with a knee injury whilst goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is a long-term absentee still with an Achilles issue.

Pep Guardiola is expected to rotate his squad with one eye on next week’s Champions League tie with Schalke, meaning Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez are expected to be handed starting opportunities.
