Mainz Open To Extending Awoniyi’s Loan Deal

Mainz sporting director Rouven Schroder has declared that the club is the open to the idea of extending Taiwo Awoniyi’s loan deal for another season, reports Completesports.com.

Awoniyi joined Mainz on a one-year loan deal from Premier League club Liverpool at the start of the season.

The 23-year-old initially struggled to earn regular playing time at the club but has forced himself into reckoning in recent weeks.

Mainz and Liverpool came close to terminating the loan agreement in January over the forward’s lack of playing time.

Awoniyi scored his maiden goal for Mainz in the 2-2 away draw against Cologne last month and has started the club’s last three Bundesliga games.

“We are in an exchange with Liverpool, that is an open position,” Schröder told bild.de.

“We are now waiting for the last games. Then we’ll see what the next steps are. ”

Awoniyi linked up with Liverpool from Imprerial Soccer Academy in Nigeria in 2015.

He has spent time on loan at FSV Frankfurt, NEC, KAA Gent and Royal Excel Mouscron.

The Nigeria striker is expected to be in action when Mainz take on Augsburg at home on Sunday.
