Awoniyi Strives To End Four-Game Bundesliga Goal Drought In Mainz Vs Augsburg

Former Nigerian youth international, Taiwo Awoniyi will be vying to end his goal drought of four Bundesliga games when Mainz 05 welcome Augsburg to the Opel Arena in Sunday’s relegation six-pointer.

Awoniyi last found the back of the net almost a month ago, precisely on May 17 when the season restarted from the coronavirus-enforced hiatus in Mainz’s 2-2 draw with Cologne at RheinEnergieStadion.

He received his first yellow card of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season last weekend in Mainz’s 2-0 away win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Commerzbank Arena but played well as his team won impressively.

Mainz and Augsburg are six and seven points above the automatic relegation places respectively but Awoniyi’s side know that victory will put daylight between themselves and the dropzone.

The 05ers boss, Achim Beierlorzer said at his pre-match presser: “We feel very focused in training and we know what’s going to happen on Sunday. It will be an intense game with lot of tackling.

“We want to make the most of our performance. The boys are all extremely concentrated. Augsburg are in a similar situation to us. This is a game that both sides will be desperate to win.”

Awoniyi has hit the back of the net on just one occasion after making eleven appearances in the German Bundesliga for Mainz where he is currently playing on loan from Premier League giants, Liverpool.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old will be forced to wait to discover his future as Mainz are currently holding “no discussions” over an extended loan spell beyond this very campaign which remains four matches.
