Man United Legend Slams Decision To Postpone EPL Games Over Death Of Queen Elizabeth II

Legendary Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, disagrees with the Premier League’s decision to postpone this weekend’s fixtures following the death of Queen Elizabth II, Metro reports.

Though there was no obligation for sporting events to be cancelled, the Premier League confirmed on Friday morning that this weekend’s fixtures would not go ahead as planned as a mark of respect for the late monarch.

A statement from the Premier League read:“At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.”

The decision was not a formality and Premier League bosses met this morning to discuss their options.

The league is facing unprecedented levels of fixture chaos this season, with the unique nature of a mid-season World Cup kicking off in Qatar in November.

But, added to that, is the sense that the matches going ahead could have been the perfect platform for supporters nationwide to pay their own tributes to the Queen.

Replying to a tweet from former Good Morning Britain host and Arsenal fanPiers Morgan, in which the broadcaster said games should go ahead, Neville concurred.

“I agree Piers,” wrote Neville on his verified Twitter handle.

“Sport can demonstrate better than most the respect the Queen deserves.”

Next weekend’s fixtures are also in doubt and if the league decides to postpone the next round of games, the next round of matches will be played in the first week of October.

This could cause further chaos for the Premier League, who have already been heavily criticised for the jam-packed scheduling of the 2022/23 campaign.
