The Stockport-born player, younger brother of Naomi Broady, will next take on Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor in the second round. The news was not so good for 17-year-old Draper, who lost 6-4 7-6 (7-0) to Japanese world number 182 Yasutaka Uchiyama.
The youngster, who made it the junior final 12 months ago, is tipped for a big career but will have to wait until 2020 for another shot at SW19. Elsewhere, Jan Choinski, Evan Hoyt, Mark Whitehouse and Ryan Peniston also lost in the first round of qualifying.
In other tennis news, defending champion Caroline Wozniacki won her first-round match in the Nature Valley International first round at Eastbourne, beating Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens 6-3 6-4.
