Monte Carlo Glory For Fognini

Fabio Fognini landed his first ever Masters 1000 title with a 6-3 6-4 win over Dusan Lajovic at the Monte Carlo Masters. Fognini went into the tournament on the back of a five-match losing streak and had lost his place as Italy’s number one to Marco Cecchinato.

The 31-year-old suggested earlier in the week he may take a break after the French Open due to elbow and ankle issues, but he may well shelve those plans after claiming the biggest title of his career. Fognini downed Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric and 11-time winner Rafael Nadal on his way to the final and fought back from an early break to see off the Serb in straight sets in one hour and 38 minutes.

“It was really tough, Dusan played an unbelievable week,” Fognini said after his victory. Fognini will move up to 12 in the rankings and back ahead of Cecchinato after securing the Monte Carlo Masters crown.
