NFF President Gusau Vows To Introduce VAR Into NPFL

Nigeria Football Federation will go the extra mile in ensuring that the country joins the league of nations that have employed the usage of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NOFL), NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau has revealed, Completesports.com reports.

Speaking during the maiden retreat of the management and staff of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in Abuja on Wednesday, November 29 2023, Alhaji Gusau said the NFF will start the process of introducing VAR into Nigerian football by sending some referees to countries who have already put VAR into practice to study it’s application and usage.

“I can assure you that VAR will be effectively put into use in our domestic football before the end of my first tenure as president of the Nigeria Football Federation in 2026. It will be gradual, but we will surely get there,” Gusau assured.

“I also want to commend the board of the Nigeria Premier Football League for their unrelenting efforts to change the face of the league for the better. the NFF and the League management will continue to introduce programs and innovations that will ensure the growth of the league.

“The NFF has been monitoring the performance of the NPFL and we are highly impressed with what they have done so far and believe they can do more. The management and staff have been doing very well and that is the reason why I accepted to declare this retreat open.

“The NPFL board should ensure that this kind of retreat is done annually to keep the management and staff abreast of development in the game. We must continue to train and retrain our staff for better output and also to assess the performance of both league and manpower,” the NFF boss reiterated.

On officiating, Guaau reiterated the resolve of the NFF to ensure that referees are given a conducive atmosphere to perform their duties on the pitch effectively and efficiently adding that any one of them who runs foul of the laws of the game or falls short of standard will be put in the cooler or banned outrightly depending on the level of offence.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NPFL, Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye assured Nigerians that the NPFL will witness more development under his watch, stressing that the retreat was intended to reinvigorate staff and assess the performance of the league and staff so far.
