NIgeria, Benin Republic Lose Out On AFCON 2027 Hosting Right

Nigeria and Benin Republic have lost out in their bid to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Council members awarded the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosting right to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The decision to award the right to the three countries as co-host took place in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday.

This is the first time ever Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will emerge as host of the Continental tournament.

In 1980 Nigeria was awarded the hosting right of the AFCON and went on to emerge champions.

The 2000 edition saw Nigeria co-host the tournament with Ghana.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Executive Council members announced Morocco as host of the 2025 AFCON edition.

This will be the second time Morocco would be staging the AFCON, after first doing so in 1988.

Morocco polled 22 votes to beat off Nigeria and Algeria who did not get any vote.

Côte d’Ivoire will host the 2023 edition which will kickoff in January 2024.

The first time the tournament was held in Côte d’Ivoire was in 1984 which was won by Cameroon.

Thank you very much for rejecting Nigeria from host the Afcon.

Charity begins at home. We have so many challenges that we are facing, and we have to put an end to. Host Afcon is a taboo while Nigerians are suffering.

Thank you once again, CAF, for rejecting Nigeria.

Most Nigerians are struggling to put food on the table while this Nigerian politicians and our bad leaders are enjoying our resources. They are very manipulative people.

No disrespect to these people, but God bless you, CAF, for stopping these looters called NFF and Nigerian government.

I will be very grateful if everything is going on well in the country but the way it is now, we don’t deserve to host any competition period. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

Thumbs up brotherman Omo9ja, this is right. Nigeria has far too many challenges at the moment.

    • 2027 nations cup is 4 full years away from now so it had nothing to do with current realities. I only think CAF did it for sporting reasons, letting East Africa combine to host a tourney I don’t think any hosted before. It was a clever decision and possibly more money spinning from 3 “virgin” nations.
Only setback, 3 countries have qualified for that AFCON leaving other nations to fight for just 21 spots. Survival of the fittest.

But it is still far sha. 2023 and 2025 editions to come first.

Perhaps the sports ministry and NFF thinks that Africa is not aware of all that is happening in Nigeria. Everybody in Africa is aware of the fact that Nigeria is having serious political crisis and CAF cannot gamble with its flagship tournament. Nigeria as currently composed cannot host CAF U-17 in 2027! That is the bitter truth. of course we have the facilities to host the expanded Nations Cup tournament but there is serious legitimacy doubt about everything related to the country right now. Thank you CAF for diplomatically stressing what is clear to the whole world.

  • I commend this. I think the competition should rotate around the continent. Hosting has been too heavily tilted in favor of West and North Africa. The last time it was in East/Southern Africa was in 1996 (South Africa), and Angola (2010).
