Real Madrid forward Rodrygo has admitted to feeling ‘upset’ after failing to make the 2024 Ballon d’Or shortlist.
Rodrygo, who played a major role in Madrid’s double-winning season, lifting both the La Liga title and the Champions League, was not included in the 30-man shortlist released last week.
His teammates Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger and the now-retired Toni Kroos all made the cut.
His omission has come as a ‘surprise’ for the 23-year-old, who scored 17 goals across 51 appearances for Madrid last season.
“I was upset, I think I deserved it,” he told ESPN. “I don’t want to belittle the players who are there, but I think I had a place in the 30. It was a surprise. But there’s not much I can do, I’m not the one who decides these things.”
Following the announcement of the 30-man shortlist, Rodrygo took to social media to post a selection of photos detailing his achievements at Madrid with a subtle caption of a laughing emoji. He later revealed this post was intended to make fun of his Ballon d’Or snub.
“I made a somewhat mocking post. Now there’s not much to say. Everyone knows my indignation. Everyone [has supported me], both in the national team and at Real Madrid. People sent messages.”
Rodrygo scored the only goal in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday and is expected to feature in their clash with Paraguay on Wednesday.
The winger has featured in all of Madrid’s fixtures this season so far, registering one goal in five appearances.
