Rohr: Super Eagles Ready To Face ‘Fantastic’ Salah At AFCON

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr says his team will be up to the task when they come up against ‘fantastic player’ Mohamed Salah at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, reports Completesports.com.

The draw for the biennial competition , which took place on Tuesday, put the three time African champions in Group D alongside Egypt , Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.

Salah, who plays for Premier League giants Liverpool is the most dangerous player in the Pharaohs team and Rohr is confident his defenders can stop him when both teams clash in their game of the competition.

“It is a big challenge to play against Egypt in the first game and a player like Mohamed Salah,” Rohr told ESPN.

“It is a big challenge for all our defense and also for all our team. We will defend collectively against him of course, and we are growing together since a few years now and I believe our defence is able to be efficient against such a fantastic player.”

Along with Salah’s Egypt, Nigeria also have to contend with Sudan and Guinea Bissau. As easy as the group may look on the face of it, Rohr is not falling for it, admitting that he would have wanted to avoid Egypt.

He said: “We have a tough group. Egypt, everybody knows and everybody wanted to avoid. But they are with us, it is okay.

“Sudan also. They have a French coach, a friend of mine, who did a good job since he arrived there, coming out from a difficult group. Also Guinea Bissau is not easy.

“We will be very, very well prepared. We need to be ready for this first match against Egypt in Garoua.”

The Super Eagles will open their campaign against Egypt at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium, Garoua on January 11.

The competition will take place between January 9 2022 and February 6 2022 across five cities in Cameroon.

IT IS NOW YOU KNOW AFTER PEOPLE HAVE CONDERMED YOUR PREVIOUS TALK

  • My message to coach Rohr there is room for learning and correction but the willingness to learn is what we are talking about learn and correct your mistakes than you will succeed stop playing players out of position and learn from Gareth Southgate tactically.

  • Chima E Samuels 3 years ago

I think if we had a sound coach then Egypt should be the one to be worried about Osigoal, Kelechi, Moffi, Paul and many more but a coach who is waiting for Messi to switch nationality to Nigeria is the one that will tactically loose to Egypt.

    NICE TALK
FIRSTLY LET ME COMMEND YOU FOR YOUR PAST FINAL-LIST YOU ALWAYS BE PRESENTED FOR MAJOR COMPETITIONS WITHOUT SENTIMENT. IN AFCON 2019, U DROPPED IHEANACHO BCOZ OF LOSS OF FORM IN RESPECTIVE OF WHAT HE HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE TEAM IN THE PAST, COMPARED TO OTHER COACHES THAT ALWAYS DO “FAVOURISM BCOZ OF PAST PERFORMANCE”
NOW THAT WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS. AFCON 2022 IS AROUND THE CORNER, WE HAVE MORE PLAYERS IN EACH POSITION THAN B4, WHICH CAN LEAD TO MORE HEADACHES IN SELECTION. I WILL LIKE TO EMPHASIZE ON THIS: THAT THIS TIME AROUND,YOU SHOULD BASED YOUR SELECTION ON “POTENTIAL & PERFORMANCE” OF EACH PLAYERS IN SUPER EAGLE. DON’T BE CARRIED AWAY WITH GOALS/PERFORMANCE IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CLUBS ALONE (FOR EXAMPLE: YEKINI VS R. OWUBORIKI IN ’92/93, AMOKACHI VS AKPOBORIE IN ’96/97, AGHAHOWA VS AKWEUGBU IN AFCON 2000,). THE FORMER PERFORMED WHILE THE LATTER FLOPPED IN SUER EAGLE.
☹️☹️☹️ LOOK FOR PLAYERS THAT WILL GIVE U RESULT IN SUPER EAGLE, NOT JUST FOR PLAYERS TO BE SCORING GOALS IN CLUB ALONE. OWUBORIKI, AKPOBORIE, AKWEUGBU,TOSIN DOSUNMU ARE HIGHEST G.SCORER IN CLUBS BUT FLOPPED IN SUPER EAGLE.
G.ROHR, POTENTIAL IS WHAT MATTER NOW
    CONTINUE YOUR WITHOUT BIAS/FAVOURISM

Great talk but the problem is that we have PhD coaches who knows more than the coach, let someone score hat trick in Finland or Afghanistan leagues for 3 consecutive game’s omo9ja and his gang of Nigeria football elders forum will vibrate and insist that they must be invited or else they will personally fire him. If we can allow the coach to do his work diligently I believe great things is about to come our way!

    • Omo9ja 3 years ago

Same view, same mistake. Football is a team work game and is not all about individual players.

The same mistakes you made at the worldcup in Russia, you were focusing on Messi and Madric forgotten about the rest of the squad.

What happened to your team in that tournament?

You don’t capitalize on one player in a team because football is a collective game.

As a coach, you have to have your tactics ready to face any team.

You can keep Salah quiet without focusing on him too much.

Nigeria played against Ronaldo, Carlos, Rivaldo and Otega at the Atlanta 96 without focusing on them too much but instead, Eagles were relying on Jo Bonfrere tactics to demoralized their opponents threats.

They said we should give you more time to put the team together. Really?

If you can not put up a solid team within the five years with the Super Eagles and I don’t think you deserve to be there.

I am deeply sorry for Amaju. The tasks ahead is beyond MO Salah.

Watch out for Sudan and G.

Oga Rohr Super Eagles that failed woefully to beat Madagascar?

It is well. God bless Nigeria!!!

The keys to stopping Mo Salah:
    1) Don’t play offside. Salah is very good at beating the offside trap, and once he’s in behind your defence, you’re in trouble.
    2) Stop him from using that left foot. Show him the right foot, always. Now, if he does damage with his right foot, send him a congrats card at the end of the game.
But he MUST NOT be allowed any oportunitY with his left foot. If he wrecks havoc with that left foot, the players assigned to mark him will have a query to answer.
    3) Cut off supply lines to Salah. The Egyptians will be looking for him at every opportunity. Intercepting passes heading towards Salah will hopefully starve him of the ball.
    4) Take our chances in front of goal. Inevitably, a player like Salah will likely find your net, or make an assist. It’s almost inevitable. So we should be looking to score goals. Hopefully, we can outscore them and carry the day.

    • How I wish Gernot Rohr could see this panacea of silencing Mohammed Sala onslaught on SE. This writer, obviously I doff my cap for you. As we’re planning on Salah so as well as Egypt would be planning on Osimhen. Egyptian Coach is also dreadful of SE. I believe 90mins will judge in January,2022

  • I personally Think Osimhen is a better quality player than Salah, I agree with Chima yes in as much as Nigeria defence should be cautious of Salah Egypt should be more cautious of Osimhen what he and Isngine are doing at Napoli is very promising, his quality is immence..Osimhen will give Egypt headaches and not only that Senior Man Kels is also on par with SaLah watch this space then we have the Rock Ndidi who should be given the captains armband in my opinion. Throw in Sammi Chukwueze, Emma Dennis, Etebo, Aribo and Iwobi.

After listing all the above, What I am more Worried about is a coach with such talent at his disposal making such a comment, seriously worrying. Why? Because, on Paper Nigeria is miles ahead of Egypt these days lets be honest.

  • Also Rohr should also be careful how he talks about players who know their quality, its not like 3 years ago when he can get away with that.
I can Imagine such comments won’t go down well with players like Osimhen and Ndidi who are seen as some of the best in their position. With the former being probably or rather arguably the best CDM in the world. Rohr needs to learn to pat his players on the back these boys will command respect in their clubs and won’t like the coach making them seem intimidated by a team who they are stronger than on Paper.

Osimhen better than salah got me rolling on the floor
Bro am from Nigeria but this one no follow even osimhen will laugh u

  • What is this one saying..? Overrating players that is the only thing they are good at. How is Oshimen a better player than Salah for God sake? Why would a good coach be hyping or ailing is players even when d match has not been played? Did you hear the Egyptian coach talking about Salah in his own interview rather he talked about his team collectively. How is what Rohr said different from his own? Nawa for you people over this Rohr matter..

    • @tayo I am not overating anybody I always say things you all disagree then I am vindicated in the long run. I won’t debate it with you. watch and see for urself this season. Osimhen Level will be higher than that of Salah’s by mid season. The way he drives forward his fight zeal, pace power…. My friend I know what I am talking.

  • The above video is mostly the form he hit towards the end of the season when his head cleared and he became more used to Serie A.. and by the looks of this new Pre season 21/22 he has picked up from where he left off 8 goals in 5 matches including an amazing brace against Bayern Munich… watch and see this season and I will talk less.

    • Ayphillydegreat 3 years ago

Maybe after this season if he lights up Serie A with incredible performances. That’s when you can compare him with Salah. Until he wins a Champions Legue and the Scudetto that’s when you can start comparing him to Salah. Potentially he can surpass Salah and other African legends in the past, but he’s not there yet. He still has a lot to prove for both club and country. This AFCON will be the defining moment of his career. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

      • Thats the whole point yo can already compare him with Salah. it is quite simple we are talking about when the two teams meet what will happen who can cause danger I feel. that Osimhen can raise his game and will be too strong for the Egyptian defence. I am also saying that Wilfred The Rock Ndidi will neutralize Salah. I mean if Ndidi can Neutralize Maharez and Grealish in the same game then okay that’s my point. who is Salah… also Onyeka can do the same. you see my dear friend @Ayphillydegreat the point i am making again, is not a debate about what they have achieved in their careers but which of the two teams can cause more danger and which of the two is better equipped to deal with it now. from my point which of the two teams do you think Bros between Osimhen and Salah who will benefit more on the day??

  • Ayphillydegreat 3 years ago

Collectively we have a better team than Egypt, but Egypt have individuals that can wreck havoc. Salah, Trezeguet, Elneny and a few of their Olympics players will be the spine of the Pharaohs. Like the gaffer has said we must be prepared for them. The outcome of the first match against Egypt will determine how far both teams will go in Cameroon especially the SuperEagles.

    • Salah and Trezeguet can wreck no morre havoc than Osimhen, Iheanacho, Chukwueze.. Players who are touted by big clubs. Even Iwobi is on a higher level than Trezeguet bro. I disagree with you HOHA!!!!!!

      • Ayphillydegreat 3 years ago

We do have a team that can beat them any day. However, we don’t have players at Liverpool and Arsenal even though most of our regulars play in the top 5 leagues. Our current SuperEagles is made up of the victorious GoldenEaglets of 2013 and 2015. Osimhen, Chukwueze, Iheanacho, Ndidi, Awoniyi and possibly Success and Nwakali if they get their acts together. You see all we have now are potentials. There’s reason to be optimistic because the AFCON is where they must blossom to greater heights. First we must negotiate WorldCup qualifiers and see who is ready for glory. Fun times ahead bro.

  • I persopnally feel that sometimes especially if you are a coach who knows his team and by now Rohr should know them well. so I feel that sometimes especially in games like this we should instill some fear into the North Africans. I feel that of late the reason we have been coming up short is because of the comments Rohr makes pre game. i.e my young team, great Salah Egypt has stars Nigeria doesn’t bla bla bla. That kind of pre game talk may have flown before Osimhen became the most expensive player in Africa and looks to be living up to his price tag or, before Ndidi became regarded by some quarters as the best CDM in the world. Abegy now sometimes we should hail our boys especially when god has blessed us with such a strong group the strongest I have seen since the 90’s
