Schalke Head Queue For Reds Striker

Schalke have emerged as the first contender in the impending summer scrap for the signature of Reds youngster Taiwo Awoniyi.

The Nigerian has been impressive during his latest loan spell with Belgian side Mouscron, but his long-term Anfield future remains in the balance.

The 21-year-old has struggled to obtain a UK work permit in the past and fears over the impact of Brexit mean Liverpool are likely to seek a fee for him in the summer.

Schalke have been making regular checks on his progress and have been in contact with Liverpool officials over the chances of striking a deal.

But they are not the only interested party, with Bundesliga rivals Mainz also keen, together with some unnamed French and Belgian clubs – according to the Liverpool Echo.

Liverpool are set to demand 15million euros (£12.9m) for a permanent deal and are open to another loan move next season. Awoniyi, who signed an improved five-year contract last summer, has scored six goals and claimed two assists in seven appearances in the Jupiler Pro League.
