Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from professional football, effective upon his contract expiration in June 2026, following medical advice regarding a severe shoulder injury.
Schmeichel enjoyed a successful career spanning nearly two decades. He was part of the historic Leicester City F.C. side that won the English Premier League title in 2016 and later captained the club to FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs in 2021.
How Shoulder Injury Forced Schmeichel To Retire From Football
The son of former Peter Schmeichel also earned 120 caps for Denmark national football team, representing the country at two FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships.

Schmeichel described the forced, premature end to his career as difficult, but expressed gratitude for his achievements and longevity in the game.
‘When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will stop my active football career. It is a decision that has been made for me,’ Schmeichel told TV 2 Sport in Parken.
‘I have consulted with various surgeons and experts in relation to my shoulder, and they have told me that I should not expect to come back and play top-level football. I have thought a lot, but I believe that now is the right time.’
‘I think everyone dreams of saying goodbye on the pitch, but you don’t always get what you want,’ he continued.
‘I’ve got so much else along the way, so football doesn’t owe me anything. I have been given so many opportunities and things in my career. So many experiences.

‘I would have really liked to have just one game, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.’
Schmeichel’s Best Performance
Schmeichel’s best performance is widely considered to be his crucial, clean-sheet display in the 2021 FA Cup Final against Chelsea, or his record-breaking penalty-saving form for Denmark, having saved 23 of 91 penalties faced.
His ability to dominate in high-stakes matches, including the 2015/16 title-winning season, defines his top-level performances.
