Seagulls Ponder Clarke Deal

According to reports, Brighton are leading the chase to sign Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke this summer. The 22-year-old made a name for himself this season after helping to guide the south coast club into the League One play-offs.

He was unable to help them reach the play-off final but the former Ipswich Town man could soon find himself playing in the top flight as Brighton are apparently keen. Clarke, who joined Portsmouth after a loan move at Fratton Park in 2016, has impressed Brighton scouts after making 48 appearances this season.

The Barham-born defender is on the wishlist of a number of clubs but new Brighton boss Graham Potter believes he can get the best out of him. Brighton have relied heavily on Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy in recent years but Clarke could soon find himself at the AMEX Stadium as he tries to force his way into Potter’s plans.

Clarke currently has just one year left on his Pompey deal and the club are unlikely to stand in his way if a Premier League club make a suitable offer this summer.
