Senegal’s 2021 AFCON Hopes Suffer Setback As Mendy, Koulibaly Test Positive For COVID-19

Senegal’s 2021 AFCON Hopes Suffer Setback As Mendy, Koulibaly Test Positive For COVID-19

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has submitted a positive test for Covid, according to Senegalese media outlet Taggat.

Mendy, 29, has tested positive just days before Senegal kicks off their campaign at the AFCON on Monday with Zimbabwe in Group B.

According to the report, it appears now to be an outbreak in the Senegal team, with nine players self-isolating in total.

It’s not clear how long Mendy will be isolating for. His absence might affect Senegal’s chances at the AFCON – which means he could be back in England earlier than expected.

Also, Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and another Senegalese star Famara Diedhiou tested positive for the virus.

Koulibaly’s Nigerian teammate Victor Osimhen had to be left out of this year’s AFCON after testing positive for COVID-19.

His participation at the tournament was already in doubt after he suffered a facial injury during Napoli and Inter Serie A game.

  • Senegalese should take heart but there is gradually a striking balance amongst the teams. Cameroonian team has their woes so is Egypt where about 6 are self isolating. Let every country make do with what is available.

It is now a general new normal which can’t take the shine off Afcon. Gabon also had its share of the pandemic. Captain Aubameyang, midfielder Lemina and assistant coach Yala Anicet all tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Cameroon. They were all omitted from the team’s training routines as they went into isolation.

  • The earlier we know that the Senegalese team is not all about Mendy koulibaly and even Mane self the better for us… The Senegalese team though with few individual talents operates as a unit just like some others like Algeria with solid defence not like Nigeria with only bunch of individual talents but still lacking the team play..

Helo Fellow S.E fans are u sure this monkey post or whatever is a Nigerian. I have been following his comments . They are mostly puerile ,non challant and targeted at casting aspersions on bonafide S.E fans like Dr Drey, OMo9ja, Pompei , et al. I think its time we seggretted him out of this group by never magnifying his comments by any precious response cos it is not worth it.

    • Have said this time without number, his comment always off point and irritating, Nigerians don’t reason like that trust me, the moron need to be check.

    • Ignore him or her.
