Shorunmu Okays Super Eagles AFCON Squad

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu insists the team have enough quality to do well at 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, reports Completesports.com.

Interim handler of the team Austine Eguavoen released his 28-man list for the competition on Saturday.

Eguavoen kept faith with most of the regulars with Olisa Ndah, Kelechi Nwakali and Umar Sadiq among the new faces.

Shorunmu is happy with players selected by the handlers and backed the team to be among the top contenders for the title in Cameroon.

“The team is okay and I think they will do well in Cameroon. The coaches have selected m the players they believe can do the job and it’s important we back them,” he told Completesports.com.

“I’m looking forward to the competition with great enthusiasm. It is going to be tough out there in Cameroon, but, I believe we will do well out there.”

All invited players, bar the UK-based crew, are expected to arrive in camp in the Nigeria’s federal capital, Abuja on 29th December, with the UK-based players expected to start arriving on Monday, 3rd January.

The Super Eagles will open their campaign against Egypt on January 11, before games against Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.

I feel that nwakali should be given the play making role in the first eleven.

My own is simple. I would like to thank all those that made it possible for the successful selection and release of the 28 members SE list. Going forward, Coach Eguavoen and his team should immediately commence the preparations by making advance training arrangements, friendlies to be played if time still permits and other important things, there is no time to waste. God bless SE crew.

Those of you yelling the cup is coming home, in 2005 when he had all the attileries did he win the nations cup? As a former goal keeper, can’t you question why Akpeyi is always there, and now alloy brought in Noble, when we have Osigwe and Adleye. so sad. Cup coming no home, excluded Tyronne and Akpoguma.

    • It looks like those people yelling are still sleeping. Hope you slept well.

There is no point crying over spilt milk, the deed is done. Hence why we should support the team. It is unfortunate that some players will make the team for non sporting reasons but it is clear that nff had a say on the list. Nwakali is eguavoen’s choice and despite his club form, he is an exceptionally talented player. Our present midfield can not pass long. Iwobi, ndidi, aribo & onyeka are really not known for their passing range. We struggled with teams like Algeria who work hard to press from the middle. Algeria has feghouli who has an excellent passing range and could find mahrez with diagonal balls to cause havoc and keep our attacking players pegged in. People who are questioning nwakali’s inclusion need to understand why. Amoo was dropped for ejuke. Both are creative play makers but I think ejuke is a more matured choice ( I would have included him if it was left to me but I understand the rationale). I would have loved to see dessers there not because he is better than sadiq and awoniyi but I think he has that uncanny sense of popping up in areas where he scores. He would have been a great option from the bench. Ndah is a ball playing centre back but is still raw. He is in because he is more used to the physical nature of african football. Rohr’s unwillingness to play him coupled with his injury record contributed to his exclusion. Musa & Shehu are there for political reasons and for musa he is also captain. Ighalo and noble are pinnick’s choice. I am supporting the team and enjoin everyone to do same.

Cyril is doing better than Iwobi and Kel Iheanacho at the moment. Football is all about current form

    • GentleD 2 years ago

Make una dey try write with sense nah… Does Cyril Dessers play in the same position as Iwobi?

  • HASSAN Tia 2 years ago

There is a defect in this squad connected with the current form of some players like: Iheanacho, William Troost,Leon Balogun, Abdullahi Shehu, Simon Moses, Frank Onyeka, Daniel Akpeyi, Alex Iwobi; thoes players are substandard and unoperative at thier clubs and Super Eagles , so I think coach Eguavoen and his crew should have to exclude them from the squad without any compliment; thoee players can’t afford any addition to SE on this strong tournament versus strong teams like: Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon, Ghana , Mali; from up to now Eguavoen can make a simple change on this squad.

  • For me i am not surprised with what i am seeing there is really huge politics in Nigeria football cus there are some players who shouldn’t have been called up and there are some players who originally deserved called up without no doubt eg players who should have been called up are Calvin Bassey, Desser, Lookman what the hell shehu and musa is doing there the same gaga gaga football we will see again at Afcon nawa shall for nff.
