South Africa Midfielder, Zungu: We Deserved Victory Against Nigeria

South Africa midfielder Bongani Zungu has rued Bafana Bafana’s disappointing exit from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and believes the side deserved victory against the Super Eagles in their quarterfinal clash, Completesports.com reports.

Stuart Baxter’s men went down to a 2-1 defeat against the Super Eagles in the encounter played at the Cairo International Stadium.

Zungu equalised for the South Africans in the 70th minute cancelling out Samuel Chukwueze’s 27th minute strike.

William Troost-Ekong however netted the winning goal a minute before the end of regulation time.

Bongani Zungu (8) and Bafana Bafana teammates celebrate his goal against Nigeria

“First of all, a very disappointing result for us,” Zungu said after the game.

“First half, we gave them a lot of respect. Second half, the coach told us to press them high and I think we did quite good and we were moving the ball well.

“I felt like we were going to score, and when we scored the goal we were in the game, but unfortunately, we lost concentration in the end.

“It’s very disappointing, we are sad, but I am very proud of the team. We fought hard, we didn’t start the tournament good, but we should have won this one. But it’s part of the game.”

Hahahhah brother he should have been happy that the game ends up in 2 – 1 I personally predicted 3 – 0 if Musa and Igalo and others clear goals attempt were all converted I think it will be about 5 – 1 anyway they are lucky
this South Africa team including there coach talks too much

  • Bomboy 5 years ago

    Yeye talk.

You deserve victory, yet the score board says Nigeria 2:0 South Africa. Where you dye when Chukwueze dey dribble all of una?

  • Pompei 5 years ago

SHOULDA…..COULDA…..WOULDA…..if wishes were horses! Our shots on goal almost doubled Banana Banana attempts. We played better. We looked the more likely to win the match. Had it not been for profligacy in front of goal, dem for collect 4 or 5 goals! Zungu, na you get your mouth. But all who watched the match know that the better team is in the semi-finals. Period.

  • Jones 5 years ago

Didn’t read anywhere were he said they deserved the win.

Sorry??? So what did he say then? He was speaking in English you know..Haba professor, okay oo pls see below quote taken from basket case zungu de Mumu’s own words – Please shine your eyes

““It’s very disappointing, we are sad, but I am very proud of the team. We fought hard, we didn’t start the tournament good, but we should have won this one. But it’s part of the game.””

Our problem is pride.after defeating that understrengthed SE in 2-0 in Uyo in 2017,we felt we have arrived. SE warned that they will ,for the return leg bring to SA a strong SE to beat us at home.

They beat us 3-1 only for referee to deny two legitimate SE goal to make it a draw. (Bribery was however written all over those two calls)

My point is, if we ignored the stats and told ourselves we beat a young team 2-0 in Uyo and we lost 3-1 in the return leg in SA, we would have prepared better for this afcon QF against SE but, we were busy deceiving ourselves,’ we went to Uyo and beat them in their backyard and drew with them at home.’ Is nothing but an illusion that we are in the same class with SE. Is a long dream….

    • Ohhh mr or mrs@andile am very sorry for u guys, but i want to remind u that yesterday game was the main bussines but the super eagles carried the day,so cry but dnt kill ur self ok,

    • Idris Olwafemi 5 years ago

Good observation from you. Too much of pride from SA just because you are fortunate to defeat them only once in many games. They now equate them self with Africa football power house. Anyways, not a bad fight though!

You are on point. Your people refused to see beyond the right thing

Well said @Andile, If other South Africans think like you, then perhaps we (SE) will have more of a challenge from Bafana Bafana, and a sustainable one at that because the country have the potential to get better but the problem SA have is a mental one, SA’s stumbling block is the same that has kept them down for so long and the reason why Nigeria will always beat them in everything and do beat them in everything especially when it matters. I am sorry but SA need to get smarter and stop running their basket case mouths – Imagine Mumu like Zungu saying they should have won?? How has he come up with that one? Is it because he was playing why he hasnt seen the complete dominance of Nigeria in that encounter?? One must be humble to achieve greatness, you cannot walk before you learn to crawl. All the best to you friend

    • Mikey 5 years ago

      absolutely correct @ ANDILE

  • This Zungu is so pathetic. You needed VAR to assist you with your only goal, yet you feel you deserved victory. Grow up man, you folks should just focus on your Rugby and Cricket.

Nigeria Super Eagles also deserved victory over Bafana Bafana in Sounth Africa on November 2018 having won by 3-1 but robbed of 2 goals by the Central Referee who was partial against the Super Eagles thus, giving SA a sense of Rivalry.
Under no circumstance is Bafana Bafana Nigeria Super Eagles rivals.
Coach Baxter has infected his Bafana Bafana players with sense of arrogance and fault-finding attitude. They should learn to be humble.

Hahaha……are u high on crack??? What??! U would’ve won with how many goal attempts, shots on goal or disallowed goals??? I can’t believe it. Bcs say una score with the help of var u come here Dy talk trash,?? If we were clinical in the final third u guys would’ve went home with a full basket of goals that would be enough for every south African citizen including those abroad. Anyway, no be u Dy talk shaaa, something else is speaking through u….lol..sore loser!

  • bishop 5 years ago

you got it well analyzed. SA has improved a lot admittedly, but if i were them i will always approach every match against Nigeria with respect and caution, not necessarily fear, but with a quality preparation in appreciation of the quality they have especially now. SA was carried away by Uyo victory that it forgot majority of the first team did not play.

  • obilor francis 5 years ago

south africa, south africa, south africa! how many times did i call u. Stop saying nonsense, just accept defeat b4 i sue u to AU football court and u enter prison wtout statement. SA, learn fast

  • Micheal West 5 years ago

How so because your goal was controversial? Then you guys never scored again..how come you deserve to win? Even though SA team has improved under the present coach but on a normal day,Bafana Bafana cant beat Eagles.

  • Lord AMO 5 years ago

VAR did not assist them in scoring.  The goal was scored legitimately, VAR confirmed it.  As to Mr. Zungu’s assertions, issorite, Ahmed Musa is the only reason you even have mouth to talk like this.  Eagles were heads and shoulders above Bafana Bafana, both physically and tactically.

    • 9jaVision 5 years ago

Dude, FYI, Ahmed Musa was one of the best players for the SE in that game and has been for a very long time as well if you look at his longevity in the game, Are you sure you understand football??

  • Lord AMO 5 years ago

@9javision, i think i do but who knows.  In any case yes he was a tormentor of that their rightback but how many times was he wasteful with the final ball or decision? Hence my statement of his profligacy keeping the south africans in the game.  This is an observation shared by just about every analyst that has reviewed the match by the way.

About his longevity, no denying that, but one has to also acknowledge that the biggest thing lacking in his game is that final ball and decision making

  • The way Argentina loves to beat us that is how we love beating South Africa. Anytime and it is always, we are paired with Argentina,  we go dey shaky shaky. So too is South Africa. They will always shiver anytime we are paired. That is how it will be until we dominate Argentina or else we will continue to beat South Africa. Even if the Brazilian team is named South Africa, we will beat them. So far make South Africa dey for the name.

  • Dipsy 5 years ago

Yes , I quite agree with you. You deserve a win….yeye dey smell.
Football is not won by wishes and boastful talk

    • Zungu is a commonplace coward and jester seeking relevance. Where was he when Etebo was making sleek  passes and connections? When did winning games become a matter of wishful thinking? Yes, you should have won that one, but you didn’t, that’s why you’re back to your stinking hole. See this  agbero exhibiting the full-blown signs of hallucinations.

  • Sunnyb 5 years ago

Yeah, Zungu you right, me too I deserved to be the richest guy in the world. You can appeal to caf for rematch

  • You are a MuMu Man

  • We refuse to divorce South Africa they are our wife chikena, any time any day.
