Sri Lanka Take Series With Second Test Victory

Sri Lanka secured a historic series victory over South Africa with an eight-wicket triumph in the second Test in Port Elizabeth.

Set 197 for victory, the tourists began day three on 60-2 and reached their target without losing another wicket to become the first Asian side to win a five-day series in South Africa.

Kusal Mendis led the way with an unbeaten 84 from just 110 deliveries and was well supported by Oshada Fernando, whose 75 not out came from 106 balls and included 10 fours and two sixes.

Having won the first Test by one wicket, the Lions knew they were on the cusp of something special but, replying to the Proteas’ first innings of 222, they were shot out for just 154.

However, Suranga Lakmal’s 4-39 dragged them back into the game as the hosts were dismissed for only 128 second time around to give the islanders a chance of glory.

They duly took it and, after the dust had settled on the contest, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne paid tribute to the team’s supporters who have stuck with them through the lean times.

“This victory is dedicated to the Sri Lanka fans who have continued to support us because they were always behind us when we were losing,” he said.

“It’s not easy when you come to South Africa, so to win the series 2-0 is brilliant.”
