Matt Lowton says a “hard pre-season” will help ensure Burnley start the 2019/20 Premier League campaign strongly. The Clarets competed in Europa League qualifying last summer as their season began in July. They then struggled in the Premier League and were involved in the relegation battle for much of the campaign before pulling clear, and Lowton hopes that without European football to distract them, his side can pick up where they left off next term.

“We enjoyed the Europa League while it was there,” said Lowton, as reported by the Lancashire Telegraph. “It was great for the club and there were lads, myself included, that had never done it. “We did enjoy it but it didn’t work out well for us come the weekend.
“It will be back to normality for us next season and a good, hard pre-season ahead of the season.” He added: “We want to start brightly and hit the ground running as we did last season. “We’ll be working hard throughout the summer and pre-season to make sure we’re ready and try and keep the form through the second half of the season.”
