‘Super Eagles Are My Team In 2021 AFCON’  –England Legend, Lineker

Legendary England striker Gary Lineker says he has adopted the Super Eagles of Nigeria as his team at this year’s AFCON.

Kelechi Iheanacho netted the winner as the Eagles pipped Egypt 1-0 in 2021 AFCON Group D opener.

It was the Eagles’ first win against Egypt at the AFCON since a 1-0 victory at the 1990 edition in Algeria.

Reacting to the win, Lineker praised Iheanacho for his stunning goal against the seven-time African champions.

He wrote on Twitter:”What a stunning goal from @67Kelechi. Given the @LCFC connection,  @NGSuperEagles are definitely my team in Africa Cup of Nations.”

The Austine Eguavoen-led team will return to action on Saturday when they will take on Sudan.

In the group’s other game, Guinea-Bissau And Sudan settled for a goalless draw.

That is how much Coach Eguavoen has placed the face of Nigeria further on the global map. Just like Leniker, many football pundits knew it wasn’t going to be easy to keep Mo Salah quiet in a match. Eguavoen’s soccer philosophy completely locked down Salah. Good luck Super Eagles, you are really super under you knew interim coach.

    Go for gold!!!

Rohrs Mentality is his greatest undoing. Hours before the match he once again reiterated his old use philosophy while in charge of the Eagles. He said ‘ Nigeria cannot pretend to be better than Egpyt, Senegal , Algeria because they don’t have any big players playing in Barcelona, Madrid ,Man city or Liverpool ” . This man hasn’t played high level football before and perhaps does not understand the The Nigerian football paradigm which is aggressive without respect to names. Nigeria is a football crazy nation whr everyone is a player or a Coach so it does not matter WHR a player is picked . We play with swagger, aggression and passion . Even street boys can do the job playing the Nigerian way that is Rohr did not Understand but Westerhof, Bonfred Joe and a certain Tico did.

    • @four four two you have nail it on the head. Very beautiful remarks. Keep it up. You have completed the happy day for me with this comment. God bless you. God bless Nigeria

    • Fireboy 2 years ago

Nice comment… but our NPL boys did not play the Nigerian way against Mexico. You can’t just gather any group of Naija boys together and they’ll play like that o lol. I know you were kidding a bit.

Anyway, our team today was a highly experienced group of youngsters. Rohr capped many of these guys and gave our young team tactical discipline. He did well for Nigeria. Today, they played with more freedom than we’ve seen in a long time. Eguavoen definitely brought back the Super Eagles way that we’re used to. We must continue playing this way and when Osimhen returns we could be WC semi-finalists! I like that Rohr imprinted the German machine style into our team. Now they can play with both flair and efficiency. If Eguavoen wins AFCON, they should just quietly pay off that Peseiro guy if they’ve already sign the contract.

Alaye. Which yeye German style did Rohr imprint on you? is it a German style that we play the likes of Liberia, Cape Verde, CAR and struggle in play ? Please please….make una leave Rohr of this. Allow the German amateur enjoy his retirement

      • ugwudede 2 years ago

Some of the boys u are saying Rhor caped were tutored through the U17, U19, U20 and some U23 by the sound Nigerian coaches before the Rhor came in and what Four Four Two said is just the point please queue behind those who are given sound analysis of the Nigeria soccer and good riddance to bad Rhor.

Pls complete sport restore the “LIKE” Burton here

    • Thanks for this comment. That was what I disliked about Rohr too. Always negative… and I’m like “what happened to having a never say die attitude” He definitely wasn’t the one to take us back to the top of football’s world map we were after USA 94.

    • That statement from rohr further confirmed my dislike for him. We had about 17 debutants players when we won in 2013. Egypt won three times in a row with local players. So where is he getting his foolish philosophy from.

The man is just unnecessarily rigid and insensitive.

Look at some of his other statements that get me infuriated

      1. No new players can come into this team again. That is foolishness

      2. We have a young team we are building for the Future

      3. The draw against caoe Verde is like a win..

For goodness sake this is Nigeria. We have the talents. This is affon we have great experience at afcon. Nigeria is the biggest country in Africa. Pride is at stake. You don’t talk us down no matter what. The reason why I campaigned vigorously that he should be removed. The football yesterday vindicated some of us. I wish him all the best. He started well but lost focus.

Did you see eguavon talk about Barcelona or young team or semi final?

Oh God bless clemence westehof. He talks Nigeria big.

Well rohr belongs to our past now. He is not a motivator. Our boys need someone who can give them motivation.

God be with the team. We will succeed at afcon in Jesus name.

…indeed the Super Eagles played free flowing football, exchanging passes, recovering immediately the ball was lost. I saw transition from the defense to midfield then to the attack.

The Super Eagles under Rohr, lacked all the qualities I saw yesterday. Kudos to NFF for taking such a decision to replace Rohr with Austine Eguavoen on interim basis, we have seen the impact. Rohr did not understand what football meant to an average Nigerian.

He must be hiding his face in shame, for not actually understanding the way Nigerian players like expressing themselves on the field of play.

I urge the technical crew led by Austine Eguavoen and indeed the players to concentrate and never allow the hype distract them from achieving their plan in Cameroon.

Am happy that countries are now beginning to see us as favourites in the tournament after writing us off before commencement.

It was really fantastic! It was looking like the Super Eagles of the early 1990s. Great job!

  • @442 really you are an intelligent commentator I like your remarks keep it up.

    EGUAVOEN WATCH YOUR BACK

I’m so happy we won yesterday and I congratulate the team based on their general play. We were more physical than the Egyptians yet were disciplined. Thumbs up, Eagles. But it is not Uhuru yet.

In Afcon 2000 Nigeria outplayed and outclassed the Tunisian team 4_2 with Okocha grabbing a brace and Kanu having three assists to his name. Everybody rejoiced and said we were the best. Four days later against minnows Congo, the Eagles could hardly muster 3 shots on goal. The fans at the Nat Stadium started pelting the same team they celebrated so much 4 days before with bottles and all sort of things. It was an eye sore.

Anyone who watched the game yesterday knows that the Egyptians had a bad day. The defenders were guilty of losing the ball in vital areas which our players should have punished 2 or 3 times yet we didn’t. We were also lucky that the ref decided not to award a penalty to them in the dying moments an Okoye, bcos of whom many here have insulted Rohr, was on hand to save the day. Let’s not forget that we also beat and outplayed this team under Rohr just 2 years ago and every team in Afcon is actually beatable.

Thumbs up coach Egu for getting his tactics right, but we shdnot forget that a coach that wins a match is the one credited with such words, even when u use the best tactic and end up losing a match u will still be labelled a bad coach. Any slip against Sudan, the fans will come for your head. We had many opportunities to score yday but we didn’t. Apart from the goal Kels scored, he didn’t really do much in the game. Moses despite his mazy runs was still guilty of poor crosses. Chukwueze was poor and Ejuke was guilty of some poor decisions. I believe we can improve and I wish the team well.

    Congratulations.

***The match against Congo ended 0-0 despite playing with 2 former and a current African player of the year.

    • Machris 2 years ago

Let us just enjoy the win for now. I know the coaching crew will work on those lapses too cos it was glaring

    • @Muyiwa thanks for your observations.

      1. The Egyptian did not have a bad day…we made them have a bad day because we played to our strength and got our tactics right.

      2. In the friendly under rohr we did not outplay them. We scored early but they gave us a good fight. Our play was not as fluid as this

      3. The team faced a lot of troubles in the past one month. A new Coach, players withdrawal, no real friendly match etc. So they can’t be perfect my frined with the first match. As okocah said no team is perfect..

      4. They should improve with each match.

      5. I believe the coach must note the weak areas and they work on it.

Let us enjoy this win. They worked hard for it. They deserved to be congratulated while they watch their back as you suggested.

  • Congratulations Nigeria

  • Four four two 2 years ago

@Fireboy, losing 4 nil to Mexico does not mean they didn’t play the Nigerian way . Go watch that match again u will see some similarities with the match against Egypt yesterday in terms if aggression, movement , self expression and confidence. Playing the Nigerian way does not mean we cannot lose. Even Barcelona lost 5 nil to Bayarn Munich playing the Barcelona way. Its not about the win yesterday even though it matters but the playing style. When last did u see moses Simon playing that way under Rohr? Did u see Joe Aribo’s movement. How about Okoye’s confidence. Even Ekong and Omero were not jittery as usual . Egu must have psyhe the boys up with good pep talk to toughen their mentality. That’s just the difference. Under Rohr we lose matches before even entering the pitch because he keeps reminding the boys how they are not playing in Liverpool and the ilks like Senegal or Eygptian players and makes them feel inferior. See what Egu achieve with 70% debutants. Mr Rohr must be reeling in shame now.
