Swedish tennis player Elias Ymer collapsed twice on the court during his opening match at the Zhangjiagang Challenger in China on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
Ymer was playing against Taiwan’s Hsu Yu-hsiou and was serving for the second set at 5-3 after losing the first set in a tiebreak.

During a long game, after turning to walk back to the baseline, Ymer suddenly dropped to the ground. He got back up but collapsed a second time shortly after.
The umpire was heard on his walkie-talkie, telling other officials, “Call the doctors and physios. [He’s] still conscious.”
Officials, medics, and the chair umpire rushed to assist him while ball kids held towels around him to provide privacy.
After receiving medical attention and a timeout, Ymer attempted to continue playing but eventually chose to retire from the match at 5-5 in the second set.

“Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately Mr. Ymer has to retire due to… injury. So, game, set, match to Mr. Hsu, 7-6, 5-5,” the umpire announced afterwards.
According to the ATP, severe nausea coupled with extreme weather and high humidity triggered the sudden physical exhaustion and collapse.
