TMaurizio Sarri has made signing a striker a priority for Chelsea this month and we look at three transfer targets, as the Blues boss searches for someone to fire the goals in the second half of the season.
1. Gonzalo Higuain (AC Milan)
Believed to be Sarri’s top target, the experienced Argentinian has bagged goals wherever he’s been. The 31-year-old has eight in 20 appearances in all competitions for Milan while on loan from Juventus this season and is likely to have the know-how, confidence and finishing ability to thrive in the Premier League.
His career stats are mightily impressive. With 55 goals for Juventus, 92 for Napoli and 122 for Real Madrid, it’s no surprise Sarri is keen on the prolific frontman.
2. Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)
The Uruguayan is another global star who has never graced the Premier League, but looks like having all the attributes to be a success. Rumours he’s unhappy at sometimes having to play a bit-part role in Paris, behind Neymar and KylianMbappe, have fuelled suggestions he would be willing to ask for a move and Sarri is well aware of his abilities.
Like Higuain, he’s 31 and Chelsea have not traditionally signed many players over 30, but Sarri will be keen to convince the club’s board he needs a proven striker.
Cavani, who has 324 goals in 519 appearances for PSG, is exactly the sort of goalscorer required at Stamford Bridge to drive his side forward in the second half of the season.
3. Callum Wilson (Bournemouth)
Playing for a club outside of the top-six club but quietly going about his business at the Vitality Stadium, Callum Wilson is an intriguing prospect for the Blues.
The 26-year-old has developed into a fine all-round centre-forward who has 10 goals already to his name this season, to add to the nine he managed last year and six in the previous campaign.
Injuries have restricted his progress – he’s had two serious cruciate knee ligament injuries since 2015 – and there remains doubts over his ability to cut it at a bigger club, but all the signs are that when pitched in alongside better players, the Englishman would thrive.
