Tokyo 2020 Football: Zambia’s Banda Makes Olympic History In 10-3 Loss To Netherlands

Captain of  Zambia’s  women football team Barbra Banda made history as she became the first African female footballer to score a hat-trick at the Olympics, in her side’s 10-3 defeat to the Netherlands on Wednesday, Completesports.com reports.

The Tokyo 2020 Group F encounter was the first ever game for both countries in the women’s football event at the Olympics.

The Netherlands also created a new record for the most goals scored in an Olympic football match.

Banda scored in the 19th minute to make it 3-1 after a feint from her beat the Netherlands keeper before tapping into an empty net.

In the 82nd minute she got her second goal to bring the score to 10-2 as she got into the penalty area with the ball under control, produced another feint to beat the goalkeeper and scored at the near post.

She then completed her hat-trick on 83 minutes after recovering the ball from a Netherlands player.

The defeat means Zambia are bottom in the group and will take on China in their next game.

Brazil who hammered China 5-0 in the group first game also on Wednesday, will face leaders Netherlands next.

    Hehehehe! Na wa ooo.
    Embarrassing.
Congrats to Banda. But I’m not sure she’ll be celebrating, being on the wrong end of such a scoreline. 10 goals conceded in the first game.
    Zambia shall be free, hopefully!

The Zambian forwards were good. The players wearing Nos 9, 10 and 11…..superb players. But their defenders were the anywhere belle face anywhere ball go I follow type of female footballers. Everyball the dutch girls put behind the high defense line was nearly a goal. I lost interest in the match by the 25th minute when it was 1-4….all 4 goals conceded in like pattern. I just couldn’t help but ask myself were we that bad that we didn’t even make is to the penultimate rounds of the Olympics qualifiers in Africa, while these Zambians made it all the way to the Olympics proper itself…? They are Africa’s sole female soccer representatives o…if Im right

Apart from the horrendous defending, the Zambia goalie’s performance stood out for me.
The first Dutch goal had me laughing uncontrollably. What the heck was the goalie doing?
Try not to laugh too hard as you watch the highlights below.
Huge embarrassment for Zambia and Africa. And this is just the first game!

  • I wonder why the Super Falcons usually find it hard to qualify for the Olympics.

It’s because NFF thinks it’s Super Falcons’ right to qualify even without playing. Preparation is always awful. Denerby’s unceremonious departure was largely responsible for our inability to qualify. But more than that, we tend to take other African countries for granted in situations like this, save Cameroon and South Africa.

U don forget say we are giants of Africa…? We have the best players on the continent. We should be winning every tournament (male and female) on this continent even when we haven’t prepared half as good as our opponents.

A whole national team traveling in a foreign land defenseless is the height of it all for me. Thank God the lunatic that harrased the falcons wasnt bearing a deadly weapon. That man was ready to shoot those girls if he had a gun…even calling them, girls representing his country, motherfukers.

Shebi dem don say na canoe we go dey use dey sail go other African countries now for away matches. I pray make pirates nor waylay them with their canoe one day.

Nigeria would have been a better rep at the Olympics football mundial but our good for nothing domestic coaches left us stranded in the middle of the desert as usual. What a disgrace

  • Shaii is it not better not to qualify at all?
