Trabzonspor President, Ahmet Agaoglu is banking on former Nigeria captain John Mike Obi to help mentor the side’s young players following his arrival as a free agent, reports Completesports.com.
Mikel penned a two-year contract plus the option of another year with Trabzonspor in June linking up with his countrymen Ogenyi Onazi and Anthony Nwakeame at the club.
The midfielder is bringing in his invaluable experience in the game having enjoyed success with Premier League club, Chelsea where he won multiple titles.
The 32-year-old also enjoyed remarkable success on the international scene with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Agaoglu is hopeful players at the club can gain from Mikel’s wealth of experience.
“It is unnecessary to talk about John Mikel Obi’s career. We are not just talking about a footballer with good work ethics, but a great athlete,” Agaoglu told Trabzonspor’s official website.
“Everyone knows how much we invest in young players. In addition, we have recruited a player who can share his experiences with our young players. Bringing Mikel here wasn’t easy for us. He knows that as well. ”
Mikel will hope to make his debut for his new club when they take on Czech club, Sparta Prague away in a Europa League Third Qualifying Round fixture on Thursday.
