UCL: Chelsea Equal 30-Year-Old Unwanted Record After Defeat To Madrid

Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio saw Real Madrid defeat Chelsea 2-0, in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Chelsea have now failed to score in four consecutive matches in all competitions for the first time since December 1993.

The loss to Madrid means Chelsea are winless in their last five games.

Frank Lampard side had to play most part of the second half with 10 men after Ben Chilwell was sent off.

Chelsea had the first attempt on 2nd minutes through Joao Felix off a counter but his low shot was parried away for a corner.

Chelsea went on the counter again few minutes later but David Alaba made a timely block to prevent Raheem Sterling from having an easy tap in.

In the 13th minute Benzema had Madrid’s first chance but couldn’t squeeze his shot past Kepa Arrizabalaga from a tight angle.

Madrid broke the deadlock in the 21st minute as Benzema tapped into an empty net after Arrizabalaga had stopped Vinicius initial effort.

Just one minute later Chelsea almost equalised as Sterling connected with Reece James’ cross but Thibaut Courtois made a brilliant save for a corner.

Vinicius almost doubled Madrid’s lead but saw his cheeky dink cleared off the line by Thiago Silva.

With 10 minutes left Benzema hit a low shot which Arrizabalaga got down well to claim.

Federico Valverde went close for Madrid after robbing Wesley Fofana but his low shot was saved.

In the 48th minute Felix tried to bend his effort over Courtois but the Belgian claimed the ball.

Five minutes into the second half Luka Modrić saw his attempted curler off Benzema’s laid pass go inches over the bar.

In the 55th minute Kalidou Koulibaly went off injured and was replaced by Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea were reduced to 10 men on 59 minutes after Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red for a foul on Rodrygo who was clean through on goal.

Substitute Marco Asensio made it 2-0 on 74 minutes as he slot home Vinicius assist on the edge of the box.

In the 85th minute Madrid broke forward but Vinicius effort failed to beat Arrizabalaga.

And at the San Siro, AC Milan edged 10-man Napoli 1-0 thanks to Ismael Bennacer’s late first half goal.

The game saw Cameroon international Andre Anguissa sent off for a second card offense.
