United Set To Make Longstaff Bid

Manchester United will reportedly initiate their move for Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff in the next 48 hours. The Telegraph state the Red Devils have now made the 21-year-old central midfielder their next summer target with a first offer set to be sent to St James’ Park by Thursday.

Old Traffored boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to be targeting young, domestic footballers after sanctioning the £15million swoop for Swansea City’s Daniel James that looks increasingly likely to go through this month. Longstaff was restricted to just nine Premier League appearances for the Magpies this season when a knee injury ended his campaign prematurely in March.

But he made a huge impact when he did play as Newcastle won four of the eight games he started in, including the 2-1 victory on January 29 over Premier League title winners Manchester City. Longstaff, who has been likened to Red Devils coach Michael Carrick, is expected to be fit for the start of pre-season.

Newcastle quickly put ‘not for sale’ notices up when speculation over Manchester United’s interest in Longstaff emerged last week and it remains to be seen how resolute they will be to hang on to him this summer.
