WAFU B Tourney: Flying Eagles Seek Final Ticket Against Cote d’Ivoire

    Adeboye AmosuBy Adeboye AmosuMay 17, 2022Updated:May 17, 202279 Comments2 Mins Read

Group B winners, Flying Eagles of Nigeria will on Tuesday (today) confront the second –placed team in Group A, Cote d’Ivoire in the second semi final of the ongoing WAFU B U20 Championship in Niamey, Niger Republic.

At stake is a ticket to next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, already scheduled for 18th February – 12th March. Only the two finalists from the WAFU B tournament will qualify for the eight-team finals in Egypt.

The Flying Eagles will file out against the Ivorians at the Stade General Seyni Kountché at 8pm, after the first semi final between Benin Republic and Burkina Faso at the same venue.

Ibrahim Muhammad and Ahmed Abdullahi scored the goals that consigned African champions Ghana to a 2-0 defeat last Sunday, before the Flying Eagles drew 2-2 with Burkina Faso on Wednesday.

The latter’s 2-1 defeat of Ghana earned them a place in the last four.

Despite scorer Ahmed Abdullahi’s injury that has knocked him out of the tournament, Flying Eagles coach Ladan Bosso is confident that his boys will rise to the occasion against the Ivorians and pick a ticket to Egypt.

Benin Republic and Burkina Faso will clash in the first semi-final also on Tuesday.

You’ll die a miserable death if you don’t find your way out of this forum. You think you can joke with around with everyone right. You’ll get what you deserve in due time as you have decided to continually cross your boundary. I shall continue laying cursed on you every single day I find you post your garbage on this site until you get overwhelmed by the grave you’re digging for yourself and your linage. If you don’t leave this forum untimely death will befall you. Mark my word yourself and yaw. The fingers are pointing at you two.

That chance missed by Okoye definitely came back to haunt us. Ivory Coast are playing with a chip on their shoulders. I like our boys though it’s coming down to another epic West African derby. Good game so far.

Nigeria have fluffed lots of chances they should have scored. If you want to go to the world cup you must earn it,you must show determination to score half chances let alone begging ones otherwise you pay dearly for it.
The Ivorians are a very good side. They press well and force our boys to commit fouls,I noted this system used by Burkina Faso in the second half in our last group game,I mentioned our knockout opponents will follow that template,im not surprised Ivory Coast are using that against us.With two yellow cards already against us a red could just gift it to the Ivorians.
Nonetheless, our boys have showed great character against equally a very good side, its anybody’s game let’s enjoy the second half hoping our boys carry the day.If they don’t?It would be another disappointment though not anything we are not used to lately anyways.
May God help Bosso and his boys to conquer this very difficult Ivorian side.

Bosso’s boys are finding the openings to create guilt edge chances. They are just failing to put these away. They should have scored 2 more goals by down if they had been more clinical. Plus the long range shots still continue to trouble the Niger Republic air traffic controllers.

I know long range shots are a staple of Bosso’s approach but his boys should practice harder to shoot with better precision and keep the shots within range.

Too many of these shots are comically wayward!

But for Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Ivory Coast would have won, easy! He pulled off 2 unbelievable point blank saves that he had no business saving. Great game but Ivory Coast looked the more menacing in the dying minutes despite Nigeria dictating play for long periods.

      It remains anyone’s game.

Nigeria should have buried some of the chances they painstakingly created in the first half!

We don’t have a team yet. The Nigerian boys seems to be having the upper hand because they are bigger and stronger than the Ivorians. However, in terms of technique, they are below average. There is a part that the coach plays in technique but there is also a part that the players must play. The Nigerian players seems not to have it. They can’t hold the ball and string 2 to 3 complete passes together. They just balloon the ball into the opponent half of the field or 18 yard box, hoping for miracle to happen.
They should thank their keeper because the Ivorians could have scored in the dying minute of the game.

Nigerian team is dominating with obviously players that could easily pass for over age. I know a lot of us will not like this but that is the truth. Are you going to say the guy that played the penalty is averagely under 20?

Josh, I usually respect your views but I don’t think what you wrote above accurately reflects how the Flying Eagles have been playing. The have strung passes together and they have created clear cut chances. Wastefulness in front of goal has been their downfall in this game.

They are physical as you said but they are also moderately skillful.

        • josh on May 17, 2022 11:36 pm

To string more passes together is not the real issue here. At most 2 passes together and the next one is ballooned into the opponent’s 18 yard box. There is no organization in their play. It is mere share physical energy. The only player I’ll pick out is the goalkeeper. The rest are either average or below average. We should look at the bigger picture here. What happens when this set of players meet the North Africans. What you want at under 17 and under 20 levels are players who are relatively young and can trap, hold, and move the ball. You want to see a team that is organized.

Josh, they strung more than 2 passes together at any one time. The Flying Eagles also created plentiful goals scoring opportunities.

I don’t think they player are highly exceptional but their skills are adequate enough for this level of football. They can only get better.

You see, I’ll agree with you. Reason is because they were assembled in at most 2 weeks. But honestly we will have to look for better players to add to the team. Some of them can improve but better plsyers need to be added to the team.

          • Greenturf on May 18, 2022 12:07 am

@Josh have you played football at a higher level at some point?I don’t know how else you want this boys to play at this level?Do you think the Ivorians are some crap side or you think every team is a prey to Nigeria?
Give this boys credit for their display,if you understand football you will know they met a solid opponent yet they owned them I will laud them for this deserving victory.

I dont’t want you to misunderstand me. I have not said the boys are bad. I said some of them are average and some, below average. I also mentioned that the keeper is good. At least from the performance he put up today. I pointed out some of their weaknesses and reasons for their domination of the game. Some of us on this platform agreed with some of the reasons I pointed out. The Ivorians were a good side and organized. Did we dominate them, yes we absolutely did. However, there are some of the players that can improve and some that will need to give way to better players, just as I have pointed out. I said we should look at the bigger picture, i.e. look at the nations cup proper and the possibility of Nigeria dominating it; something that every football loving Nigerian will want to see. The team has tried and done very well but we should not also rule out the need for them to improve.

Thanks for being straightforward on the penalty. I’m sure VAR would have overruled it because it was actually soft. It could even have gotten the Nigerian player a yellow card. But I will also blame the Ivorian player who initially lunged forward to tackle the Nigerian player.
Funny enough most people here will not see it penalty a soft one since it favoured Nigeria this time around.

It looked soft though I felt sorry for the Ivorians.
          That wasn’t a penalty.
However,it was a reward for Nigerian dominance,we were better than the equally good Ivorians, both teams deserves to represent Africa in the world cup.
A great match indeed.I was entertained to 120mins of explosive football.
Meanwhile, Daniel Daga has won back to back man of the match.
That young lad has a great future to think he’s just a 16yrs old marshalling our midfield with aplomb.
