Waldrum Invites Ajibade, Oshoala, Plumptre 19 Others For Super Falcons Vs Japan Friendly

Head Coach Randy Waldrum has called up 22 players of the Super Falcons, among them Rasheedat Ajibade and Asisat Oshoala, for next month’s international friendly match against the Senior Women National Team of Japan, Nadeshiko, in Kobe.

The team is dominated by the usual suspects but also welcomes four members of the U20 girls that reached the last eight at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica in August.

There are first choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defenders Osinachi Ohale and Ashleigh Plumptre, midfielders Regina Otu, Halimatu Ayinde and Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene, and forwards Uchenna Kanu, Gift Monday, Vivian Ikechukwu and Toni Payne.

The match serves as continuation of the Super Falcons’ preparations for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand, and comes just weeks after a two-match tour of the United States of America, in which they lost 0-4 and 1-2 to the USWNT.

I guess Pesseiro is still consulting with Picnic before he releases his list of players for the friendly against Algeria..

  • This team will never do anything in attack hence they keep refusing to call Desire Oparanozie to the team.as long as am concerned this team ain’t gonna do anything in attack.

Wasn’t her last goal for the Falcons in 2016 vs. Cameroon in the WAFCON finals? Yet, you insist on calling an an old mama back, who should have been retired years ago
      Very funny.

While you’re at it, why don’t you call back Perpetual Nkwocha and Florence Omagbemi too? Mshew.

  • It is an interesting line up. That said, notable exclusions include Nicole Payne, Esther Onyenezide, Onyi Echegini, Amaju Mbadi, Akudo Esther Ogbonna and Fransisca Ordega.

It is at least reassuring to see Waldrum and Lauren Gregg experiment with a wide pool of players ahead of the world cup next summer.

One has wonder whether Desire Oparanozie will ever feature again for the Super Falcons having been continuously absent from the team since September last year. A number of fans still believe she can produce more compelling performances in place of Onumonu.

In any event, this team has enough steel, solidity and firepower to cause a huge upset against Japan.

    Good luck to the ladies.

  • Can Waldrum’s Latest Super Falcons Squad Defeat Japan In Upcoming Friendly?

Underwhelming head coach of the Super Falcons of Nigeria Randy Waldrum is still seeking his first win against a highly rated team in the Fifa rankings as he unveiled his latest squad last week.

Nigeria will trade tackles and shots with Japan in a high profile women’s friendly encounter slated for the 6th of October in Kobe, Japan.

It is an interesting squad that he has lined up for this eagerly anticipated lighthearted duel against former world champions. It returns fan favourites like Nnadozie, Toni Payne, Ashleigh Plumptre and Uchenna Kanu.

Waldrum’s Super Falcons came close to defeating mighty Canada in their own backyard in April but in the end had to settle for a 2:2 draw.

Just this month they were close to finally halting a 23 year losing run to the United States with the match poised to end 1:1. But the Americans dipped into their vault of magic to tip the match in their favour with a slim 2:1 denouement.

In a year of near misses in friendlies, will this game against Japan be the game changer? Nigeria fans will hope so.
