Randy Waldrum has expressed his desire to remain in charge of the Super Falcons despite the team’s poor showing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The Super Falcons lost all three group games in the women’s football event.
The nine-time African champions scored a paltry one goal and conceded five.
Waldrum stated that he would like to keep on going and inject new blood into the team and take them beyond the next Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

“I would like to [stay on],”Waldrum told ESPN.
“I love the team. I love the direction that we’re headed. After a rough start here, I think we’re headed in a good direction.
“There’s a lot of upcoming talent as we start to move some of the older players out after the Olympics and bring some young talent in. I think we can accomplish great things in the next level.
“That’s more of a question for the Federation. I don’t know if they want me to or not, but I hope they at least appreciate the fact that we had the showing that we did at the World Cup and that we have qualified them for the Olympics.
“And I hope they see that we’re doing some good things and but that’ll be a decision that’s up to them. I’m just thankful that we got through all the rough times and appreciate the belief the NFF has shown in me to keep me on and allow me to do my work. But I certainly would entertain staying on beyond.”

To be honest i love this man and the way he set up the team to play matured and tactical football. What failed Nigeria was not tactics but lack of good finishing which i think the Coach will work on. Brazil borrowed a leaf from our tactics in their semi final clash with spain and because auite unlike Nigeria they had good strikers they were able to beat spain 4;2
“To be honest, I love this man” is a wise thought I seriously doubt NFF would yield to. They are on a mission to decimate our senior national football teams. I think they hate the stability of the Falcons so chaos would soon ensue with their farcical training of female coaches a few weeks back. Normally, Waldrum should have got assurance since that his job is safe but who the gods want to kill, they will first make mad.
Super Eagles still don’t have a substantive coach since February – forget Finidi episode. He was a pawn in their game. I hope Gusau and his team don’t dream of second term.
There are 5 windows for falcons to play friendlies before 2024 ends but I dare glasshouse to arrange even one for them.
Ah….you want Gusau to organize friendlies for the Falcons…? That’s like asking a crocodile to overtake a cheetah in a race for bushmeat in the savannah.
Even when the Olympics was starting us in the face, he never organized a single friendly from March when we qualified, till July when Canada invited us to play with them during our camping.
Even South Africa that did not qualify for the Olympics will be playing 2 friendlies against England during the next window.
I am 100% sure this NFF is never gonna use their money to organize a friendly for the Falcons till we land in wherever for the next AWCON. We should be praying that God should touch the hearts of the FAs of other countries to invite us for friendlies.
You’re spot on, Bro. It’s like these folks want to harvest crops from a field they never even bothered to plant. Sending a national team to an international competition without a single preparatory match? That’s not just madness—it’s a masterclass in self-sabotage. And yet, somehow, the powers that be in Nigerian football think they’re pulling off some genius move. It’s like trying to write an exam without studying and expecting to ace it. Spoiler alert: you fail, and you fail hard.
I’m still scratching my head over how everyone kept quiet about the Super Falcons not playing a single friendly before the last Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Sure, they did well, but that’s no excuse to sweep the glaring lack of preparation under the rug. If they had crashed out like we did at the Olympics, the outrage would’ve been deafening. But, hey, since they managed to defy the odds, everyone suddenly lost their voice. And now Gusau, the repeat offender, pulls the same stunt—wasting one of the two precious FIFA windows before the Olympics. It’s like watching someone repeatedly stick their hand in fire and act surprised when they get burned.
Lack of preparation was the main reason we got booted out of the Olympics. The coach didn’t have the chance to properly assess players who could’ve stepped up, especially with key players like Ayinde and Plumptre out. These players’ absence was like taking the engine out of a car and expecting it to run. Okeke tried, bless her, but she was filling shoes three sizes too big.
Now, as we head towards AWCON next year, I’m not holding my breath. With Gusau at the helm, expecting miracles is like expecting rain in the desert. Nothing’s working under his administration. The man even sent the Beach Eagles to AFCON without a single preparatory match. We all saw how that played out—Mauritania came to Kaduna and handed us a lesson in preparation. Waldrum might stay, but with Gusau in charge, he’s being set up to fail spectacularly. And when it happens, we’ll all act surprised, won’t we?
@Papafem, I don’t blame you for forgetting how many friendlies the Super Falcons played post-WAFCON, between September 2022 and April 2023 in the run-up to the 2023 WWC – given that we LOST 6 of those 8 games (including 6 games in a ROW, for the first ever time in Super Falcons history) – but that’s the most-ever number of friendlies that the Falcons have ever played over an 8-month period (heck, in a year even!) in its storied history.
No o. We dont want you anymore. We want Madugu…!!!
NFF please give us Madugu.
We want him in charge of the team henceforth on a permanent basis. We want him so he can use that his attacking tactics he used in defeating Capeverde and Ethiopia to go defeat the likes of Spain, England, Brazil, Japan and Morocco (with 9 men) for us.
Good coach defensively, the next coach shud be good in mid Field matters.
So nff look for a coach that is good in the midfield.
And
For super eagles look for a coach that is good in defensive matters after the game against Benin republic. ..
I have always stated, they should keep Waldrum. He has been consistent and professional with the job. His positives outweigh his cons.
Obviously, there is much work to be done, most importantly, working on our creative and scoring issues. And finding the right balance from defence to attack. But we have something to build on.
I am glad he is looking ahead and thinking of injecting new blood to the team, as well as aiming beyond the WAFCON.
We have quality players that have the potential to become an elite team. We got the tools, now, we need to re-ignite our mindset to elite level. To become such, you need to believe first. It all starts in the mind.
I wish him and the Falcons well.
My only prayer is that the Gusau and his daft board, uncharacteristically, do something right for once and support this team with the necessities.
But wouldn’t be holding my breath.
NFF and Nigerians you can keep him so he can sack good players and bring his new players since you people think the players are the problem and he’s the best achieving coach to ever coach SF. It is not my problem and will never be I have washed my hands from Naija matter especially football before some people I don’t know from Adam and Eve use this medium to disrespect me by all means. I wish Nigeria football Goodluck because it is always a joy to see once country of origin doing well….. There’s more to life ll focus on what matters henceforth!!!
This Chima self…
You Nigerians are never grateful. Don’t you see Randy’s “new players” like Chinonyerem MaCleans who nearly won us the Olympics gold medal…oh wait! LOL!
If it had been a Nigerian coach who selected Macleans, whose only Falcons’ involvement was a cameo bit part at WAFCON and who has never been called up since, did not play in any of the pre-WC friendlies, the WC or any of the Olympic qualifiers and infamously did not play a single minute at the Olympics, and charges of “corruption” would have been pulled out of the behinds of those licking Randy’s behind! Abegi, make he carry his “new players” commot for road.
I really don’t care about Waldrum’s shortcomings.
Any coach well versed with the NFF’s appalling way of managing our football and still able to produce professional performances here and there wins my vote hands down.
Under “normal’ circumstances, I would have courted the view that Waldrum has run his race and now no longer has nothing new or fresh to off the Super Falcons. Hence he should step aside for a coach with fresh ideas.
However, nothing is not normal with this NFF as these are truly strange times. Should Waldrum vacate his post, the semblance of normalcy around the Super Falcons at the moment will evaporate speedily.
A new coach will not be announced until the eve of next year’s Afcon after which they will announce Salisu Yusuf as the new Super Falcons coach.
Waldrum, please stay.
Make this man park him bag dey go abeg…which kind of akpu football we come dey play like this…I thought he coached the under of the USA team..na so Dem dey play? Instead of him to introduce those kind strawberry kind of football na akpu kind..so if na akpu kind of football we want we go just employ our own here
Nothing technical about the team atall…
Abegi let the Randy dude stay…
There’s a rumour that FIFA is going to change the rules of the game so that goals do not matter anymore, and then we can build upon Randy’s aspirations for more goalless displays and continue to celebrate 0-0 draws (even against an aging Cameroon team)!
