Werder Bremen Retain Bundesliga Status; Pip Heidenheim On Away Goals Rule In Relegation Playoff 2nd Leg

Werder Bremen on Monday retained their Bundesliga place after their relegation/promotion playoff second leg against Bundesliga 2 side 1. FC Heidenheim ended 2-2 at the Voith-Arena, Heidenheim, Completesports.com reports.

Florian Kohfeldt’s side won it over two legs on away goals rule. The first leg in Bremen last week Thursday ended goalless, which heightened the Bundesliga giants’ worry in the fight to avoid their second relegation in history, following their 1979/1980 season experience.

Bremen went out fighting in Heidenheim, asserting themselves much more than they did in the first leg, but FC Heidenheim put up another gallant display, synonymous of a team hungry to earn their first ever promotion to the German top flight.

Heidenheim started with a hard-luck by conceding early in the third minute through an own goal by Norman Theuerkauf . And they frantically chased the game until Tim Kleindiest drew level at 1-1 in the 85th minute.

Werder Bremen might have thought they had bagged a late winner when Ludwig Augustinsson scored in the 94th minute, but referee Felix Brych awarded Heidenheim a penalty-kick just three minutes later (97th) and Kleindiest converted it for his second goal of the match. And so it ended 2-2 at the Voith Arena.
