‘What I’ll Do If Messi Breaks My World Cup Record’ —Germany Legend, Matthaus

Legendary Germany skipper, Lothar Matthaus, has said he will be the first person to congratulate Argentina captain, Lionel Messi if he breaks his record at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

This year’s FIFA World Cup is set to take place between November 20 and December 18.

Two-time World Cup winners Argentina are in Group C alongside Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland.

Matthaus, who captained Germany to the World Cup glory in 1990, has played 25 World Cup games which is the highest number of appearances in the competition.

Messi has played 19 games and could break Matthaus’ record in this year’s tournament.

And Matthaus stated that though he has had the record for over two decades, he will congratulate the seven time Ballon d’Or winner if he eventually surpasses him.

“I like having this record and I’ve had it for 24 years now, but if Leo does that I will be the first to congratulate him,”Marca.com quoted Matthaus as saying.

“I was a fan of Maradona’s now I’m a fan of Messi’s particularly because of what he did at Barcelona.

“It hasn’t been the same for him in Paris so far, but maybe he can get Argentina back to where Maradona had them in 1986.”
